Our bodies lay intertwined beneath the bedsheets. Our legs were tangled, her arms around my waist and my hand tracing her abs. It was late, almost two in the morning, but we weren't asleep. We'd been going non-stop since 10:00, with a few breaks to eat (pizza, not each other) and shower together.

Now we rested in the pillows, admiring New York City sprawled before us. I leaned sideways on her bare chest, her lips brushing my neck.

I'd been considering how best to speak with her. I knew her body, I knew her intimately—but I didn't know who she was.

"Addie?" I whispered. I'd taken a liking to the nickname.

"Yes, darling?" she mumbled against my neck.

"Where did you grow up?"

She pulled her mouth away, her lips parted in a slanted smile. "Why do you want to know that?"

"Because I know nothing about you. Except what you like..." I trailed off, my hand on her stomach sneaking down to touch the inside of her thigh.

"I was born in Italy," she sighed. "We lived there until I was ten. When the Mafia strengthened a branch here, my family moved."

I turned to look at her, but she was staring out the windows at the city. "Your parents were part of the Mafia?"

She nodded. "My whole family. It was our entire life." I detected a note of sadness in her voice. My right hand remained wrapped around her shoulders while my left leaves her thigh to cup her face.

"Did you ever want something else?" I asked.

She gave me a sad smile. "It didn't matter what I wanted."

"It matters to me."

Adelina pressed her lips to my temple. "Sometimes... sometimes I wish I could walk away."

"Then do it," I whispered.

She shook her head. "It's not that simple, Jo. I'm a spy, and I'm a damn good one. I know too much. They'd never let me go."

I buried my head in her shoulder. "It's not fair."

"It hardly ever is."

"Twenty two. It's not enough."

She gave me a slight nudge. "What?"

I sighed and rolled away to meet her eyes. "On Friday night, at midnight. Dmitri said I had forty-eight hours to rescue you, or... or..." I trailed off.

Her gaze sharpened. Her hand moved to my chin, forcing my eyes to lock with hers. "He threatened you?" she snarled. I'd never seen her eyes so cold.

"I just... I wish we had more time," I finished, avoiding her question.

She pulled me into a tight hug. "Jo... it'll be okay. Tomorrow, things will change."

I tried to turn my head to face her, but she held me tight. "What do you mean?" I mumbled against her shoulder.

"Trust me," she whispered. "Now get some sleep."

I had more questions, but at the mention of sleep I realized how exhausted I was. It was a long day, and a longer night. I made myself comfortable in Adelina's arms, nuzzling my head against her neck.

"Goodnight," I mumbled.

She kissed my temple. "Goodnight, darling."

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought I heard her say something else.

"They're going to pay..."

When I woke up, the bed was empty. The floral scent of her skin lingered, along with the smell of sex in the sheets, but she was gone.
