" Kate, come down here please!" Sighing, Kate rolled out of her bed and onto the hard wood floor. "Kate!" "Coming Dad!" Wondering what could be so important, she threw her long blonde hair into a messy bun, put on her favorite bunny slippers, and stomped downstairs. When she got to the bottom of the stairs she heard glass breaking in the kitchen. Rushing in she saw her dad trying to reach what looked like a wooden box on top of the fridge. "Dad," Kate sighed. "What in the world are you doing?" "Nothing, nothing. Just trying to get files. But hey, what do you think looks better, a black tie with a blue shirt? Or a black shirt with a blue tie?" Bewildered, Kate looked at her dad and waited for him to explain. When he didn't she asked, "why do you need to know? Have a interview or something?" Her dad sighed as he pulled the box from the fridge. Almost as soon as he got it down, he moved swiftly to keep it out of Kate's sight. "Dad what's with the box?" "Oh this? Nothing. Just something I needed for work. Now back to the ties. Which one?" "Well," Kate sighed, "it depends on what it's for." Her Dad looked at her as if he can read her mind. "Now Kate, I know you don't like me going out on dates but I have to move on." Kate turned toward the window and had a flashback of the day her father told her about her mothers accident. She was on her way to pick up Kate when her car slid on a sheet of ice. "Kate? You OK?" Snapping back into the present, Kate saw her Dad with a face of worry. "Yea Dad I'm fine. Just be careful OK? Oh and wear the black shirt and blue tie. It'll bring out your eyes." Smiling, she headed back to her room. She climbed back in bed and threw the blankets over her head only to hear a tap on her window. Startled, she looks out her window and see's her boyfriend, Luke, smiling at her. "Good morning Princess." Kate smiled at him and her heart did a little leap. Her and Luke started off as best friends but ended up dating ever since the forth grade. "Move over, I'm coming in." "You know if my Dad ever found out you sneak up here everyday, he'd kill me and you." "Ahh. No worries. Den likes me. He won't do anything." Laughing Kate gave Luke a hug. "How was your trip?" "It was good. The Bahamas are beautiful. Just like someone else I know." Luke said with a wink. Kate naturally blushed and gave Luke a quick kiss on the cheek. "Well, your just in time for school. Tomorrow's the first day back since the explosion." About two weeks ago Heaverst High had an explosion in the science lab. Since then, the kids had to do their work online, at home. "Lucky me." Luke said sarcastically. "Oh come on Babe. Schools not that bad. At least we're enrolled in all the same classes." Kate said, giving her boyfriend a sweet smile. Luke laughed and kissed her on the lips. "That's true. But I'd better get going. My parents need me to finish up the yard. See ya later." With another quick kiss, Luke climbed out Kate's window and ran to his house. Smiling down at him, Kate felt as if everything was right in the world. "Bloop!" Kate looked at her computer and saw it was a notification for a Missing Child's website she's kept tabs on. When she clicked on the photo and caption, her breath caught and she fainted.
