Chapter 1: Now Entering Overton
"Emma! Wake up!! Emma" shouted my younger sister Alex.
"What do you want cant you see I am sleeping here?" I said rubbing my eyes.
"Mom needs you." Alex said
I sat up in bed and walked to my door. The floor boards were creaky but I was used to it . I closed the door and I entered the hallway and got halfway throught it when i felt someting graze my left leg. I froze only to realize that it was my cat Snip. I picked him up and held him in my arms. I continued to walk through the hallway and entered the kitchen and saw my mother spreading jam on the bread.
"Alex said that you need me?" I asked to make sure that Alex wasn't just trying to pull my leg.
"Yes, Emmaline I need you to go to James' Bakery and get some more bread for dinner tonight.
"Oh okay let me just get cleaned up and I will head over there."
Before I could leave, she grabbed my arm and said "Dont forget to leave without your breakfast." I took the bread and headed back to my room and opened the door. I opened dresser and got out some old blue jeans, a black t-shirt and a dirty black jacket. Before i head out the door, I grabbed my old tennis shoes.
I opened the door and all the sudden I was filled with a gust of air. The air wasn't fresh but once again I was used to it. Everyday it was the exact same thing. It was Overton, a town outcast by America. Nobody ever excepted us outside these gates. We had to rely on each other because otherwise we would all fall apart.
I walked down the steps and saw Alex's friend Lucy coming towards our house.
"Hey Luc, hows it going?" I asked.
"Oh hey Emma, is Alex home?" she questioned.
"Ya she is inside just go on in." I stated
"Thanks. Okay see you later, Em." She said waving goodbye and entering our house.
"See ya Luc." I said walking away.
I started walking towards James' Bakery and saw somone running toward me in the distance. It was Josh, my bestfriend ever since I arrived here in Overton.
"Hey Em, I have been looking all over for you."
"Oh hey Josh I was just heading over to James' Bakery; Wanna walk with me."
"Ya sure I was just at Chloe's house and --
"Oh my gosh is her mom doing your doing!!" I spoke before he could finish.
"Well she is getting better but I really wouldn't be worrying about her mom as much as Chloe."
"Wait what is wrong with Chloe?" I spoke sounding worried.
"Remember her old boyfriend Thomas, well... umm... she is pregnant."
I stood there in shock. I felt so bad for her. She was only 17 and was going to become a mom. I felt my stomach sink to its bottom.
"And that wasn't even the worst part."
"What could make this worse."
"Thomas told her that he didn't want any part in the baby's life and he wasn't going to be there for Chloe."
I looked into Josh's eyes and hugged him tight.
I whispered in his ear and said "Promise that if that were to ever happen to me, that that you would be there for me."
"I promise that no matter what situation you are in, I will always be right by you're side. No matter how complicated."
That just made me hug him even tighter. "Thank you." I said. I let go and we started to walk to James' Bakery.
Finally we made it.
Josh opened the door and took a bow. "Here you are your highness."
I giggled and cursed, "Thank you kind sir."
"No problem." he said breaking the royal talk.
"Oh Emmaline Rust what can I do for you today." he asked so politley.
"Can I get another loaf of bread?" i asked
"Well lets see, follow me into the back."
I did as I was told and followed him into the back.
"I can see that you guys are running low on bread" I said.
"Yes well budgets weren't the only thing being cut around here. Our supplies were cut as well and I am telling you kid, that there is some conspircy going on around here." he said.
"Oh that is really weird." I said unsure of what to say.
"Well here is your loaf of bread that will be $7.20." he said
"Prices are going up huh." I questioned.
"Well you gotta make a living you know."
"Yeah, I get it. Lately, it has been rough for everyone I guess." I said thinking about how it had been lately.
We headed back to the front of the store where Josh was waiting ever so patiently.
"Well I am done here so where are we going to spend the rest of the day?" I asked Josh as we were leaving the store.
"Ummm... let's got to the willow." he said smiling.
"Okay let's go." That was Josh and I's tree ever since we were like 5.
