Rue Franchot. 1:17 A.M.
Wellsbury, Massachusetts

"Howdy, Neighbor." I was still hiding below the window just low enough so the boy who nearly frightened me to death couldn't see me. "I can still see you." Or not.

I slowly lift myself up and turn around with a defeated look on my face. The boy is now leaning against his windowsill, arms propped up against the border and his head jutting out in the slightest. "Hi." My voice sounds almost sarcastic with the word dragging on longer than it should have.

I was able to make out the features on his face a little better, the lamp post in between the both of our front yards assisting. Brown fluffy hair, chiseled face, but not so much that it's intimidating, and dark, kind eyes.

"You just moved in right?" I respond with a nod and a 'yeah' so quiet it almost came out as nothing but a breath. "I can tell you're nervous," Sure I was. He didn't have to say it out loud, though. "Don't be. Not around me." What. I straighten my back a little more and lean against the window to match his position.

"Who said I was nervous, pretty boy." I wasn't about to let some wannabe 90's heartbreaker from Massachusetts think I was nervous around him.

"You think I'm pretty? Thank you so much, Princess," Princess? What the fuck. "I didn't catch your name. Hi, I'm Marcus. Marcus Baker, and you?"

"Hi, Marcus! My name is none of your business but it was so nice to meet you. Goodnight now!" It might've just been the sourness left over from moving but this next door neighbor wasn't making things any better. I hear him mutter that he'll find out my name eventually, but even when he does, we're going to be on last name basis for a while.

Bitch. No I didn't mean it like that. Stop. I did though. My new next door neighbor was a bitch, at least to me.

What did I do wrong? Why wouldn't she tell me her name? Why couldn't I stop thinking about her for the entire night until I fell asleep? There were so many questions that would be left unanswered unless I took my ass to school on time.

8:13 A.M. Two minutes before I could get to my first class. Mom told me to "do well" on my way out of the car. I nodded, of course, but I knew I wasn't going to.

I slug myself through the halls considering the generous four hours of sleep I got last night. Weed didn't do shit like it usually did and I didn't understand why. My head is facing the ground. I'm not usually like this.

Thud.

I've just run into someone. Predictable.

"I am so sorry. This is my first time in this school and I don't really know my way around. Here, I'll help pick your stuff up-" I kneel down to meet this person who was practically begging me to forgive her for my doing.

"Well hello there, Princess. You aren't as tough as you were towards me last night now are we?" A few snickers rose from a couple of students near the lockers.

"Hey. I told you to stop calling me Princess, and yes. I'm a quite friendly person to everyone except you, pretty boy." See what I mean? She rolls her eyes in an intimidating, almost playful way. The girl gets up without helping to pick up my things like she said she would.

"My name's Rue, but you can call me by my last name. Franchot."

The things I would have said to this pretentious bitch boy from this stupid rich town if we were alone and it wasn't my first day there.

Less than twenty minutes since school started and I've already got someone I hate who also happens to live in the room right across from mine which really doesn't help my situation at all. What also makes this about ten times harder is that he's attractive. Not like I'm attracted to him, especially how he acts around me at least, but he's attractive. Conventionally.

My first class was Chemistry. It was syllabus day so there was nothing I really needed to pay attention to. I overhear the girl next to me whispering to the girl behind her. "Both my parents are out of town which means you and everyone I like is coming over. My mom didn't think through and left the alcohol cabinet open with no lock."

The girl was wearing skinny jeans and a bright pink hoodie. She had wavy brown hair and her features were soft. She looked easy to talk to. "I'm so pumped. Besides my brother. He's still going to be there and you know him and his lack of social party ethic."

"Max, you know I'm fine with your brother being there. More than just fine actually." I see the previous girl mutter gross while turning back to look at the board.

It was nearing the end of the class, about eleven minutes. I was packing my things until the teacher decided to announce that we would be going around and telling our name and favorite musical artist. Icebreakers. Of course.

The girl next to me and stands up to introduce herself. "Hi, my name is Maxine, but you can call me Max. I'd have to say that my favorite musical artist is any movie or musical soundtrack which isn't really a musical artist but I like those!" I was preparing since I knew I was next.

"Hey, my name is Rue. I like a lot of artists but I've got to say The Smashing Pumpkins or The Front Bottoms are cool." I look around and catch Max's eyes which were wide with what I hope was in a positive way.

On the way out of class, I feel a hand grab my shoulder. It was Max.

"Hi! I heard your introduction for the icebreaker today and I need to be your friend. I also saw you this morning. You were the one who totally bodied my brother, right? He was looking at you with aw like the entire time. Marcus is interesting sometimes." Brother? Oh.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I'm not usually the type to be like that especially in public. I guess it was just the conversation we had last night through our windows." Max looked at me with the same wide eyes as before.

"You're the girl I heard from my bedroom at 1 in the morning? I kept wondering why the old couple next door sounded awfully like a high school girl. Oh, come to my party! It's tonight at 7. My parents won't be home. Some vacation to God knows where. Be there!" Wow. She talks a lot. I liked it, though. First day and I got in an argument with someone and got invited to a houseparty.

There was one thing I had forgotten. Marcus was Max's twin brother. So I had to see him. In the same house. I didn't care. I was going.
