ACT I | CHAPTER I
THE GLOW IN THE DARK STARS that littered their bedroom ceiling were slowly starting to fade and peel away. Danielle patiently watch the one above her head stubbornly hang on the chipping coat of dark blue paint, wondering if it would last another day or whether it would hit her in the face while she was sleeping. She liked space, the infinite abyss that expanded into the oblivion, threatening to suck them up in a black hole in a matter of moments, but the novelty of the decor wore off some ten years ago. It hadn't changed since, and Danielle doubted it would any time soon.
Still, for the past fifteen minutes since she woke up, head uncomfortably woozy and limbs too lazy to move, save the repetitive motion of bringing her lit cigarette to her lips, Danielle laid on her bed and stared at the darkly coloured ceiling and greenish little starts. If she concentrated enough, she could fall back into sleep, just for a little while.
She hoped it was the weekend already, or at the very least, a Friday. No amount of caffeine, or something stronger, could haul her ass to Roundview for classes on this particular morning. Now, if only she could close her eyes for a second—
Bang! The fuming figure of her younger sister was standing in the doorway, arms crossed and eyes narrowed at the fag resting between Danielle's fingers.
"You said you won't do that in the room!" The bitchy little creature was already marching across the room to throw the window open, fanning the air around herself.
They were seventeen and fifteen respectively, sharing a room while abhorring the idea of sharing the same air the other breathed. A funny configuration, established to 'make them bond more closely,' if their parents were to be asked.
"I sleep in here as well, you know. My stuff fucking stinks of that shit," Georgia complained, picking up parts of her school uniform off the floor and back of a chair.
The little miss perfect went to one of the few rare private schools in the city, always on the pedestal for this or that, a play or outstanding grades or pretty, polished manners. Danielle couldn't think of anything more humiliating than being passed over in everything by her snotty little sister.
"Fuck off, sister dearest," Danielle sang back, flicking the ash in the discarded teacup on her bedside table. It produced a weird smell when it hit the soggy tea bag at the bottom.
Georgia eyed the scene with unhidden disgust, buttoning up her shirt in a hurry. All she ever preached about was how her nicotine addiction would bring her to early grave. Give it a year, Danielle thought to herself, I'll give you a year, you little hypocrite.
"Choke on it, it would make my day," her sister finally snapped back, grabbed her satchel from the floor, and slammed the door shut behind her.
