There was a rapping of knuckles on the door, startled I tore my eyes away from the window. "Come in-" I said, my voice a mere croak. I hurried over to my desk and poured myself water from a flute, hands trembling and dripping droplets everywhere.

"Alexa?"

The voice was so familiar, so velvety and rich. Comforting like the smell of pine and evergreen, but also soft like being nestled in the arms of a beloved. My hands stilled, my whole body did. I set down my cup and air settled- frozen in my lungs as I dared not breathe. I waited, hearing my heartbeat thunder in my eardrums. I waited for him to say something more. To break the moment.

"Marry me."

My eyes wrenched themselves in his direction.

"What?" The words stumbled from my lips as my brain struggled to comprehend the scene before me. Theodore, dressed in his tuxedo, clutching his top hat in his hands.

He stepped forward as if pushing away from the weight of the world.

"I know that I'm too old for you. That I'm an undignified commoner and bloody stubborn politician. I will never really fit into your world like Ollie could, but Alexa I know that I will always fit in with you."

His eyes were wet and his beautiful face fallen in the most desperate of pleas. Once I had compared him to statue of a glorious Greek Hero, but now it was becoming ever so clear our story would be more of a tragedy.

"You're perfect Theo." I said painfully, looking away.

"So than marry me. I will never love anyone more than I love you."

His hand delicately circled my waist, timid as if terrified to break me.

"Don't cry. Please."

I hadn't even realized tears had begun to escape my eyes, and with a careful touch he wiped them away, never looking away.
