Lacing my fingers between the silk fabric strung around my neck, I found myself nervously adjusting my tie for the umpteenth time this afternoon. Spinning on my recently polished shoes I caught my reflection in the mirror, hands immediately reaching to reconstruct my quiff. Not that every strand of hair wasn't already gelled in place, it just gave me a much needed momentary distraction.
I'd been fidgeting all morning, an overwhelming mixture of anxiousness and excitement coursing through me since the moment I lifted my head off the pillow. I had only experienced this feeling once before, a broad smile stretching my lips as I recalled the memory.
Wind whipped at my hair the higher we climaxed, our cart creaking obnoxiously as our height steadily increased. I kept my eyes trained on the ground below, watching fascinated as everyone and everything shrunk to mere dots in my vision. I ran my thumb across the hand I was holding, rubbing soothing patterns into the soft skin. Tyler had been on edge all day, so much so I even suggested we didn't come to the carnival. He insisted though, his determination to have an adorable date seemingly more important than his well being.
I had begun humming our song quietly in a futile attempt to comfort him when our cart stopped abruptly, my body spastically thrown against the handle bar.
"What the hell?" I voiced. Tyler chuckled beside me, suddenly ending the awkward persona he'd lugging around all day. I gaped at him shocked that not only his entire demeanor had changed in an instant but the fact that he was laughing about being stuck on a metal death contraption.
"How is this funny?" I questioned angrily, confused with his change of character and quite scared of the position we were literally stuck in.
"Just enjoy the view babe," Tyler stated calmly, his fingers nudging my focus on the buzzing life below. I took in the multiple rides of the fair ground, head spinning radically as I realized just how far up we were. Dangling from the top of the ride, our cart was literally the peak of the entire fair.
"Tyler we are stuck in the air, in a rickety old cart and you want me to enjoy the view? Sorry babe, my human instincts are telling me to flip out right now," I whimpered, my fingers splayed across my thighs and nervously running up and down in a rhythmic pattern.
"Troye relax-"
"You're telling me to relax after I've been tiptoeing eggshells around you all day, no Tyler, I want off this cart now!"
"Hey Troye, chill out it's not like that, let me explain I-"
"Tilly I'm scared," I whispered, my throat constricted by the sickening anxiety building in my chest. Tightening my grip around Tyler's hand, heart thumping sporadically in my chest I let my view drop to the carnival below. Tyler's fingers slid into place with mine as I felt our cart teeter slightly, a gust of wind creating nothing but fear the longer it insisted on blowing. Shutting my eyelids harshly I buried my forehead to rest in the crook of Tyler's neck.
"I'm scared."
"Shh, Troye it's okay, everything's fine just focus on me, think of Nutella," Tyler mumbled against my ear, each brush of his lips on my skin slowing my heart rate down considerably. I giggled softly at his attempt to make me laugh with our inside joke, which inevitably worked. Inhaling deeply, I relished in the comforting smell of Tyler that reminded me he was here, by my side, and that I was safe with him. My head on his shoulder, his arm draped protectively around my thin frame we sat atop the ride for endless minutes, and I found myself content being trapped in the sky, weird as it sounds. I had my love by my side and the world below my feet, everything would be fine. We would be fine.
