Brooks POV

“What?” I ask.

“I was just at his house, I ran all the way over here,” He pants.

“Just get in the car,” Jake says, grabbing a shirt off the back of the couch and throwing it on. I slide on my shoes and hop in the passenger seat, Alex sliding in the back, still panting. Jake pops open the door and slides in, starting the car and backing up quickly.

“So what happened?” I asked, turning to face Alex.

“Cabby and I were over to help work on something new,  sorry we didn’t tell you by the way, we figured you’d want a couple days alone before jumping back into work. Anyway, Derek, Cabby and I were in the kitchen, and he was going to get Grey a bottle, and he just kind of collapsed. I caught Grey and Cabby caught Derek, and we called an ambulance. I ran over here while Lauren called a sitter, and they left. Thats all I know!” Alex says from the back seat.

Jake speeds up, his fingers grip the steering wheel tighter, and his gaze locks on the road in front of him. His free hand is on the center console, and I lock my fingers with his, breathing heavily. I stare out the window, and my heart is in my throat, nervously beating a million miles an hour. Jake turns to look at me quickly, and I keep facing the moving trees outside. Calm down Brooks, Derek’s going to be alright.  I tell myself. We pull into the hospital moments later, and we burst into the emergency room waiting area. Cabby and Lauren are sitting in the corner of the room, and we walk over and sit with them. Lauren looks up at me, her eyes red from crying.

“Have you heard anything?” I ask, as a doctor walks through the door.

“Oh,” Jake laughs as Lauren gets up.

“He’s requesting to see all of you, if thats alright,” The doctor tells us. He points us in the direction of the room Derek is in, and we all walk in, one by one. Lauren stands by his bedside, and he opens his eyes. Lauren hugs him and cries slightly.

“Hey, come here baby girl,” Derek says, moving over and making room for her in the small bed. She hesitantly climbs up next to him, curling up to his side. He pulls his arm around her, and kisses her head.

“Hey, shh, its alright, I’m okay, I promise,” He whispers.

“What is it then?” Alex asks.

Derek sighs, and looks up, looking between the four us, and then back to Lauren, and then back to us.

“Uh, I passed out due to low blood sugar. It looks like I have diabetes. But, I’ll be fine. I just have to watch how much sugar I consume and everything. I’m perfectly the same, I promise!” He smiles from the bed.

We all process the information and told Derek we wish him the best. The doctor came in and told him he was free to leave after getting all the necessary information and everything under control. With Lauren still in tears, Jake offered to go to their house and pick up Grey and Bailey for the night, so they could be alone for a while.

“Do you guys mind?” Lauren says hesitantly.

“Not at all! We love watching the girls!” I say, excitedly.

“Alright, well, there should be a bag of stuff in the nursery with everything you’ll need for Grey, and just grab a couple bottles from the fridge and some baby food from the cabinet. And if you need the playpen thing for her to lay in, its in the closet. Just grab some clothes for Bailey from her room, alright?” Lauren asks.
