It was just a regular day for the Brown household. Adam, a young man, who's tall with brown hair and brown eyes went to work. And, his wife Hannah, a middle-sized women with blonde hair, blue eyes stayed at home with their 8 month old daughter who has green eyes and fair hair.
Adam hates his job, he's been at it for many years but he doesn't have any other option as he needs the money to support the family. He's a PA for the manager of the Office he works at. He's not a nice man, very bossy and doesn't smile a lot. He writes a lot of letters, and does random things for him. He's goes out every morning to get his coffee for him. Dark roast, splash of milk and a sweetener tablet; if it's any different and he doesn't like the taste, then he'll have to go back and get him another one. He's had it this way forever. He doesn't get paid a lot of money either, there's no bonuses, and no extra tips here and there for having to do unwanted jobs for his manager, nothing. He works 6AM-5PM from Monday to Saturday every week. He has the occasional day or two off through the year and he has a week off in July and a short break from Christmas to New Year.
He's struggled a lot with finances throughout his whole life. After leaving high school, he tried to go straight into employment. But, at the time it was hard to find a job. His father worked in the mines and he died when he was still young in an accident, he wasn't told many of the details and he didn't want to know most of them. He didn't see much of his mother either as she worked long hours trying to make as much money as possible. They lived in Plymouth at the time but before he went to high school, him and his mother moved to the East Midlands. His mother wanted a clean slate after all the traumatic things that has happened in her life. Many years later he managed to get the job as a PA. Here, he met his wife to be, Hannah.
Hannah had a similar experience to what Adam did. Both of her parents died whilst she was in her final year of high school and she then went to go and live with her grandma. After she left high school she went to sixth form to study Geography, Maths and Chemistry. She was a bright girl. Bit then when she was on her way to head to University, finances would be an issue and it would be basically impossible to pay of the student loans after she's finished. So, she finished her A-Levels and went to find a job. She was also in a difficult place like Adam on finding a job. She managed to get a job in a cafe where she worked for a few years. She then moved to an office job for a pen & pencil making company and that's where she met Adam, love at first sight.
They became friends very quickly, and then they started dating and 2 years later they were engaged. They got married in a registry office as it would have been too expensive for them to have a big wedding in a Church. They then bought their first house together. They bought a small stone cottage on a country lane. It wasn't what they wanted but it's still a nice house in a quite area; very peaceful. It's got a 2 bedrooms a little kitchen with the basics and a wooden kitchen table set, a living room with a 22" TV and a sofa and two armchairs surrounding it. The bathroom is old-fashioned and has a toilet which looks quite dirty, a small sink and a bath/shower. Three years after they were married and bought there cottage they had a daughter together and named her Cheryl, she doesn't scream much and doesn't wake Hannah up that much at night.
"I'm off to work now. I don't want to be late hun."
"Okay. Oh! Make sure you go and pick up a lottery ticket after work, you never know when our lucky day will be. And get some bread and milk to as it won't last the weekend."
"Right, see you tonight. Bye Cheryl!" he said in a high pitched voice.
So, Adam drove to work. He has a Renault Clio that he's had since his first job. Its broken down many times and often in dangerous places. It isn't a big deal anymore if it breaks down as it's turning into the norm. He went into the local coffee shop and picked up the coffee.
"It's here Adam, made and ready for you." said the Barista.
"Thanks, see you next week!"
"Oh! Before you go, here's a one on the house for you. You help a lot with keeping this business alive."
"Well thank you!" said Adam in surprise.
Adam worked through his day like normal, filling in documents for clients and printing out letters for his boss. He tries to avoid his boss as much as possible as he's bound to say something which isn't very nice and unnecessary or he'll be asked to do another task which he could easily do himself.
After his long day in the hot, stuffy office running around for his boss, he made his way to the corner shop to get the lottery ticket.
"Hello, can I have a one lottery ticket for tonight's draw please."
"Yes, certainly."
"Hopefully I'll finally get lucky. I've been buying this ticket, once every week for many years now."
"Well, I wish you well!" said the cashier.
"Have you ever won anything before"
"Nothing that has changed my life because I'm still working here! But, I do win £5 every now and again."
"Yes, me too. I hate my job so I'll leave it if I win."
"I would too, good luck and have a nice evening."
"Nice talking to you, bye!" he said.
He makes his way out of the shop and gets back into his car. Then he remembers that he needs to pick up the milk and bread. He sighs and goes back into the shop to get them and makes his way home.
"I'm home!"
"Hi, did you get everything from the shop."
"Yup! The lottery ticket for tonight's draw, milk and the loaf of bread; just like you asked."
"Thank you, make sure you put the ticket in the safe spot before you do anything else."
"Will do."
The lottery ticket always go in the small dusty pot on top of the fridge as they are sure that they will never loose it. The pot was a wedding present that they got from a friend. It just it the cupboard still in its box until one night they couldn't find the ticket. They eventually did find underneath the sofa. But, it wasn't a winner.
They have won in the past but nothing major. Just a £5 and £10 here and there. They are still waiting for their lucky ticket. But, they don't know if they will ever get it. Although, tonight could be their lucky night.
