The sun was setting as pre-show music played through the speakers, bass rattling the ground. A group of close friends invited me to a festival. My heart nearly burst when I saw C/n, not knowing previously he had been invited. We arrived just before the events and concerts began, which gave us time to set up our lawn chairs and picnic blankets. As soon as we finished setting up camp, the countdown to grand opening flashed up on the screen.
I was getting goosebumps, nervous and excited for what tonight would hold. I was sitting down in a lawn chair between two of my closest friends, visibly hyped for the concert as well. However, I was not only jittery about the concert. I was getting antsy about C/n being here. I glance over at him and notice a huge grin on his face, eyes directed at the screens. My heart swells at the sight. He's perfect.
C/n and I have gotten close recently, giving me the chance to be more comfortable around him. But as our friendship grows, my huge crush on him grows.
The thump of the drums begin to vibrate and my chest pulses along with it. I hear the drop and after that it's like electricity is flushing through my veins. The crowd cheers and begins jumping up and down to the beat, singing along to the popular lyrics of the song. A few of my friends get out of their seats to dance around. I smile brightly and look around the venue. There are happy families here with smiling children, teenagers young and old, and even some older crowds gathered together. I soak up all the beauty in this moment but my thoughts are interrupted when I hear a thump in the chair beside me.
"This seat taken?" I hear a familiar voice shout over the music as I turn to face him. A grin spreads across C/n's face and it takes everything in me to keep myself from squealing at the sight of him.
"I guess not." I shout back and return the smile. I laugh at my friend that had previously been sitting in the lawnchair, now dancing like a maniac.
"Personally I'm a huge fan of this song!" C/n remarks, tilting his head my direction so I can hear. Of course, the closeness makes my stomach do a backflip.
"Really?" I question him, scrunching up my nose. Personally it's not my taste. He lets out a loud laugh,
"Kidding. It's not my kinda jam." He shrugs his shoulders, staring me directly in the eyes.
"Oh, please then, what is your kind of 'JAM'?" I emphasize the word jam so as to make fun of his wording.
"I'll let you know when it comes on tonight." He replies, grinning through every word. We have both been grinning so hard throughout this entire conversation I'm certain my cheeks will fall off. When I think about it, the constant smiling gives me a glimmer of hope. Maybe he is seeking more than just a friendship. But I would never want to jeopardize anything. Not now anyways with everything going so perfectly.
"Well since it's not really OUR type of 'JAM'..." I smirk at him as he rolls his eyes. "Why don't we grab a bite?" I ask, gesturing to the food carts at the entrance of the festival. He smiles and nods,
"Sounds good to me." Again, returning a very bright smile. We get out of our seats and head towards a cart with some carnival style foods. C/n buys a bunch of stuff for both of us to share.
"You didn't have to pay for me you know." I say as I take a bite into a corn dog. He just smiles cheesily at me,
"No I did. You're the lady." He says sweetly. My heart warms up at the kind gesture. Why does he have to be so perfect?
By the time we make it back to the lawn chairs, daylight is completely gone. I notice that the wind has picked up and the temperature has dropped. My face is cold and my eyes begin to water from the impact of the wind. I finish my corn dog and relax in my lawn chair, grabbing a blanket to keep me warm.
A new song begins to play and I notice C/n perks up at the sound. He turns to face me,
"Now this, this is something I can jam to." He says excitedly, making a rock and roll symbol with his hand and sticking his tongue out. I giggle and shake my head at him. It doesn't take long before he gets out of his chair to dance, videoing the band on his phone. I watch him, standing in front of me, swiftly moving to the beat. He finishes up his video recording then turns around to face me,
"Come on! Let's dance!" He shouts back at me, holding his hand out for me to grab it. I gasp inwardly at the sight of it. I hardly give in before he pulls me out of my seat to stand by him. My heart is stuck in my throat as he wraps an arm around my waist while raising the other one in the air. He sings his heart out to every lyric of the song.
I take a look at his face. His eyes are squinted as he shouts certain phrases loudly, nose red from the cold. He is holding me close as he sways back and forth to the rhythm, fingers every once in awhile changing their placement. I stare at him for ages and soak it all in. Suddenly, he turns to face me and smiles. I fear I might be getting ahead of myself but it seems we are both getting lost in each other's eyes. I watch his facial expression change from happy to awestruck and my cheeks go pink. He lets out a small laugh before rejoining in with the rest of the crowd on the chorus.
I pray that the moment doesn't go away...
