I squished my cheeks, all the air blowing out of them and making a funny sound. I giggled. This is what I do when I am bored, and being in the car with Sherry fangirling and Josh singing off tune to the Beatles definitely counts as boring.
"Sherry, you said this diner was close. Forty-five minutes away is not close." I said, irritated. I didn't even like Jake, and should have stayed at the room. But no, here I was, in a car with two idiots, on my way to see someone who might not even be there.
"Well, it is closer than New York, where your mother lives. Hey, have you talked to her recently?" Sherry replied. I internally facepalmed at her caught up in the moment stupidness. This girl had problems.
"Sherry, New York is about six hours away by plane. Of course it is closer. And yes, we had a lovely chat about her giving my number to male strangers this morning. This one's name is Freddie." I said with faux excitement. Sherry laughing and even Josh chuckled.
"Why don't you just let her think we are together? I mean, she would leave you alone, and I would have an excuse to go somewhere else for the holidays!" Josh exclaimed. His family treated him like a three year old, being the youngest in the family. Josh was twenty-two and they still didn't give him alcohol.
"Because I want to focus on my studies, and that will be hard if I get all caught up in our little web of white lies!" I reasoned. Josh gave me a mocking look. Sometimes the English major in me really shined. This reminded me...
"Hey, Sherry, you still need to help me with that paper. Today!" I told her, in a bossy manner. She gave me a look and went back to excitedly staring out the window.
"Hey, Paige, hand me the CD in the glove box. No, not that one, the purple one. The PURPLE one, this is blue!" Josh directed me. I tried, but he eventually leaned over and got it. I felt my heartbeat rate raise about ten notches when his eyes left the road.
He leaned back up and put the CD in the player. I let out a breath of relief and he scoffed, hearing the uncertainty in it. He always was an unsafe driver.
I smiled as we got off the freeway. We pulled into the parking lot of a cute little diner, and took the last available space. I assumed that the word of Jake's appearance made it out to the public.
The diner was really small and cute. It had the classic white and red, with the leather booths. We walked in and there were girls everywhere. I caught a glimpse of the infamous, or famous I guess, Jake Newton. He was even hotter in person.
I frowned, the urge to pee overtaking me. Sherry started squealing, having caught sight of her idol, and I told Josh where I was going. There was a single unisex bathroom and luckily it was open. I went in and locked the door behind me. I was about to pee when someone knocked on the door frantically.
"Please! Let me in! I don't care if you are taking a shit! They are going to tear me apart!" A voice yelled frantically from the other side of the door. I walked over and opened it to a panicked Jake Newton. I let him in and locked out the fan girls.
Jake sat on the closed toilet, head in hands. His shirt was literally just one scrap left on his shoulder, and someone had punched his face, leaving a scratch. I almost gasped. I just realized that the most wanted single guy in the country, probably world, was sharing a bathroom with me. Who would've thought that would happen? Not me! Maybe my mother...
"Hey, umm, are you ok? You have a little scratch," I said sympathetically. He lifted his head and he looked scared. He stood up and I had to restrain my eyes from drifting to his well-defined eight pack. It really was gorgeous. I pulled some disinfectant wipes and two band aids out of my purse and held them up.
"Yeah, some crazy chick ripped of my shirt and her boyfriend apparently was with her and took a swing at me. I didn't even provoke him. Gosh damn this stings." He said, exasperated.
My heart pounded. I said gosh damn instead of the alternative as well. If Sherry was here, she would freak out. I started tending his cut and I gave him my cardigan. I laughed when he looked so girly, it wasn't even funny. Okay, it was, but I wasn't going to tell him that.
"Hey, thanks. You literally saved my life. Those girls have no restrictions. And half of them already think we are married. But you are honestly prettier than pretty much every other girl in that diner." He said honestly. I felt the blush take over my face. I had to disagree though. Sherry was gorgeous. And I am sure she would be hurt by that, so I decided to keep that to myself.
"It's really no problem. And I think you wear that cardigan better than I do." I said, earning a laugh from Jake. I took a good look at him for the first time. His hair was in between blond and brunette, and his skin was naturally tanned. His perfectly straight white smile was heart-stopping and his skin was perfectly clear, making me self-conscious about my almost gone acne.
He smiled and said, "So, where would I send this if I wanted to give it back?" I felt weird. Was he hitting on me? Of course not, this guy could have any girl he wanted. Plus, I don't need a boyfriend. Whatever.
"Umm, yeah. I live in my college dorms. I live in B4. Oh, at Orange West College." I said, and laughed at my stupid comment. He smiled and then his face turned serious.
"Hey, can you not mention this to anyone? My PR would absolutely kill me for taking this from you. Well, I will see you later. My bodyguard is waiting for me. Bye!" He said. See, Paige. He is embarrassed to be seen with you!
Whatever. This isn't even that big of a deal. I don't even care that I met him. I shook off any weird feelings I had and walked out of the bathroom. I found Sherry, looking bewildered.
"Jake left! He just ran off and disappeared! This sucks! I was hoping to meet him! Ugh!" Sherry said, unhappily. I almost laughed at the irony. I didn't want to meet him, but I did, and Sherry wanted to meet him so desperately but didn't get to.
"Come on guys, let's just go. The smell of desperate is too strong in here." I said, monotone. I wished I could tell her and Josh, but I promised Jake.
"Okay. Come on Sherry. I am sure Sean is waiting for you. Let's just go." Josh said, ushering her out. Sean was her boyfriend and Josh's best friend.
"Okay, fine. At least I got a glimpse of him!" Sherry said, and then proceeded to fill me in on what I missed.
"You really need to get yourself together before we get back, otherwise Sean might ban you from watching that show he is on." Josh said to Sherry. She rolled her eyes and kept going.
"If he doesn't, I will. I will literally set it up so the TV doesn't go to that channel. I am so cereal." I said to her. She stuck her tongue out at me.
"Fine, I will just talk to Cindy about it." Sherry said, acting like a three year old. Cindy was my other close friend. I had Sherry, Sean, Josh, and Cindy. I really wished that Josh and Cindy would just date already. Wait, no, I wouldn't want to be a fifth wheel.
I sighed and said, "Please do. Save us from our misery. Oh, and Josh, what time are we going to play mini golf?" Josh scratched his head. He set up that our group would go play mini golf that night. Brilliant.
I was about to call him out for not planning it when Sherry squealed and said, "Paige! You lost your favorite cardigan! We have to go back!"
Oh, this will be fun to explain.
