Chapter Eight: Slipping Away
“You’ll forgive me.” Jack said suddenly. I tried my best to look at him confused, but the darkness still masked my face.
“Forgive you for what?” I fumbled around to find my own voice and when I did, it came out just as puzzled as I felt.
“For what I’m about to do next.” He murmured.
I wrapped my arm around his neck letting the coolness of his skin prickle against mine. I didn’t know what he was planning. All I knew was that Jack had been silent since he rescued me from Tatiana. And time, it was different here. I didn’t know how to count it so I just remained silent as he held me in his arms and strode forward.
What happened next was a bit unexpected. Jack gently placed the palm of his hand to my forehead never missing a beat as he continued forward. I didn’t protest. In this world, he was the closest thing I had to a friend. And as he retracted his hand, I noticed the heaviness of my eyes. I struggled to keep them open, but the rest of my body fell slack. It craved rest. It yearned for a peaceful slumber I was unwilling to give it. In the back on my mind, I knew I had to give in. But I wanted to fight it. I wanted to stay awake and see this bold new world for everything it was.
“Sleep.” Jack’s voice curled into my ears and nestled into my brain. “Sleep now or you will perish.”
I groaned. I couldn’t help but wonder why I was chosen. Why was I special? I blinked twice knowing the only person who had the answer was carrying me to an unknown location. As my vision continued to blur, I stole one last glance at him. Slowly the sun touched his skin. Crystals glittered against his flesh, and then, every faded to black…

My head felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to it. And my eyes, somehow they refused to work for me. I rolled onto my side taking fluffy sheets along with me. I let my hands dance along the blanket trying my best to figure out the strange texture. I could only describe it as feeling a cloud. It was soft and light, but warm at the same time. I wrinkled my nose and tried opening my eyes again. This time, I was able to force them open.
The room I was placed in reminded me a lot of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Ice crystals were everywhere. They made up the furniture, the walls, and even the expensive looking chandelier. The floor was made of snow along with most of the decoration, and a soft frost covered everything, including me. I shifted uncomfortably and pulled myself into a sitting position. My eyes were on fire, vigorously trying to grasp every memory that came flooding into my head.
“You’re up.” Someone spoke. I immediately recognized the hoarse monotone lull and snapped my neck into the direction of the noise. The boy I’ve come to know as Jack Frost was sitting cross-legged and nude on the pure white couch nestled in the far corner of the room. His eyes had once again flooded to their normal mercury color and his skin to the pale marble blue with cream-colored swirls and lavender splotches. I grinned nervously up at him and stretched.
“What are the chances this is all a dream?” I murmured.
His face hardened. “This isn’t a dream.” No emotion touched his voice. My smile dissolved. I sighed.
“Humor me.” I pleaded. “I’m simply human, as Tatiana so kindly pointed out. My puny human brain isn’t capable of processing everything that’s happened.”
“Sarcasm?” He guessed cocking his head off to one side. I giggled.
“Yes. Sarcasm.”
He nodded and slowly rose to his feet. I watched as he peddled closer to the bed and crouched beside me. I couldn’t tear my gaze away from his eyes for even a second. They reflected my image, and showed me just how dreadful I actually looked. I shook my head. No wonder Tatiana was so hostile towards me. I was a disgrace and suddenly I couldn’t remember why I was so determined to go on this wild trip. Something about my mother. Did it matter now?
