I closed my eyes and prepared for my world to go red and pain to envelope me, but instead I heard a call from behind the other dragon, and all went silent.
"Wait! I said wait!"
The big, purple dragon turned around. A small brown and green dragon, about my size, scampered over to the taller beast and gave it a glare with its orange eyes.
"Don't just go around scaring other young dragons, Uncle," the dragon continued as it gave me a friendly glance. Its voice was a little high to be a boy, but it wasn't squeaky like a girl. It was a blend of the two. But judging on how skinny this dragon was, I could only assume that it was a young female.
"Sorry, Tala," the elder dragon muttered. "I thought he was one of the Captured. But he doesn't seem like his eyes are gold. They're more of a reddish color, actually. But its very rare that you'll find a Light Dragon that's not part of the Flame Order. Ever since the Great Dragon War, most of the Light Dragons were wiped out and the ones living were captured and brought into the ranks of the flame order. Your mother told you stories about that, I remember."
Captured? Great Dragon War? Flame Order?I took in all of this information one piece at a time, figuring it wasn't such a good idea to let it go to waste. I needed to address the questions I had, but I knew it wasn't my time to speak or else I'd get whacked in the face.
"I trust him! He looks as innocent as a baby mouse. Light Dragons that aren't under the Flame Order have hearts of gold. Or... So I've been told." Tala walked over and sat next to me, her medium wings folded up.
I studied her more closely, and she was quite the specimen. The upper half of her body was a light, warm, grass green color, while her lower half was a light mud brown. She had two small branches that came out of her head, and they were dabbed with leaves. Judging on her appearance, I could tell that she was an Earth Dragon. Or whatever they call it is this mixed up dragon realm.
Tala gave me a curious look.
"Hello there! I'm Tala. Apprentice Earth Dragon, Rank four. Who are you?"
I met her gaze with a more seluded, unrevealing gaze.
"I'm Byron. Light Dragon... I think. But I'm not an apprentice--"
"Ooh! Are you a Battle Dragon yet? Or a Healer Dragon? Or a Blacksmith?"
This chick had a lot of energy. If I was going to have to spend my time as a dragon with her, I'd have to force myself to not lash out on her.
Note to self: Buy earplugs at the nearest store. But then I realized dragons couldn't go into supermarkets, and I let out a silent groan.
"I... Don't know what those are," I reluctantly confessed. "Sorry."
Talas Uncle gave me a suspicious glance. "You mean you're a dragon from outside the ranks?" I flinched.
"Yeah, uh... I'm kind of a loner, y'know? I decided to come to the ranks because I... Didn't have anywhere else to go," I lied. Normally I'm pretty good at being sneaky and fantastic at telling lies, but with dragons it was a whole new ballgame. I just hoped everything checked out okay.
"Oh... I see. Well, if you want to join the Ranks, I'll take you to master Fenr tomorrow. He can get you set up to take the trials. Just let Tala take you home to her parents for tonight. If anyone asks, just tell them Pyth sent you to stay with them while your parents are on a Mission. Understood? Now Tala, show Byron the way to the Earth Dragon Grottos." Pyth rushed Tala and I to the edge of the gave, and at once Tala took off as she grabbed my tail with her claw.
But I didn't know how to fly.
We tumbled down to the forest below, each for different reasons. Tala fell because she was started, and I fell because I didn't know how to do anything dragon related.
"Are you a dragon or a flightless bird?!" Tala hissed once we-- I mean she-- landed on the ground in the Earth Dragon area.
I breifly explained to her that I didn't actually know how to fly, and she groaned in frustration.
"Byron, this is a major problem. If you can't fly, then you won't be able to take the upcoming trials," She started.
"Then you'll just have to teatch me," I said with a smirk.
If dragons could even smirk.
