𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐓 my arms, scratching and pulling at my clothes and skin, blood threatening to spill. My breath heaved, shallow inhales racking against my lungs. The need for survival overtook the need for water or a break.
Voices.
Loud, mocking, excited voices sang and hollered behind me, inching closer by the second. Their feet pounded against the soil, twigs and leaves crunching under their feet as they neared.
I gasped for breath as I shielded my face, leaves slapping my arm as I pushed through. Small water droplets rolled down my arm as I moved, the cold sensation cooling my body enough to keep going.
Arrows whizzed by my head, making their mark in a tree next to me. "Shit," I gasped as I swerved to the right, my feet catching against a large rock. My body was thrown forwards, flying through the woods before tumbling onto the soft and earthy dirt.
I coughed. My breath hitched in my throat as my ribcage ached from the impact. The voices grew louder and closer than before. Before I could push myself up, a foot pressed itself against my back, keeping me down in the ground.
"Surprisingly farther than I would've thought," A voice said mockingly, a tinge of amusement in their voice.
"I'm amazed you didn't get me sooner" I grunted in response, "Somebody's been slacking, I see," I added with a sly smile.
The boy scoffed, and I could practically hear the eye roll. "All Pan needs to know is that you were found,"
"Awe, you're telling Peter about me already," I faked gushed as I rolled over, tucking my hair behind my ear.
The tall, blonde boy looked down at me, "You are really something else,"
Grinning, he offered his hand which I gratefully took. Pulling myself up, I brushed off my clothes and flattened my wild hair. "I'm taking that as a compliment, Felix," I replied as I began walking back to camp.
Felix began to reply but decided against it with a laugh. Soon enough, we were walking side by side back to camp. "Has Pan told you what training we're doing this week?" He asked after a second of comfortable silence.
"No..." I grumbled, "He hasn't told me anything except 'You'll find out later' whatever that means,"
The forest had grown dark as we walked through, small ounces of beginning moonlight streaming through the thick canopy leaves. Small animals scurried around, quietly chattering to one another as they moved along the wet ground.
Wind gusted around us, blowing my hair away from my face as the slightest hint of orange glowed in the distance. "Maybe just trust him, he always has a good reason," Felix told me sincerely, which was odd even for him.
I raised my eyebrow at him, "Okay, did someone die or something?" I asked annoyed. "Everybody has been walking around with their mouths shut and their guards up like I'm a walking time bomb,"
