Thunder roared and lightning flared as darkness consumed the flaming house. A deadly silence crept inside, penetrating through the air like thin ice. The little girl cowered behind her stuffed bear, weeping. She trembled violently. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks, as her heart hammered against her chest.
“Daddy!” She sniffed, embracing her bear tightly against her chest. “Beary, will Daddy save us?” No response came. Her question lingered in the silence.
“No. No, he won’t.” A grating voice replied. Deafening and hefty footsteps made their way towards the terror stricken little girl. Sealing her eyes shut, the girl shrank behind her bear. “Now, now, don’t hide. Not from me.You know you can’t hide from me. So why do you even try...”
“Anna.” A voice said from beside her. “Are you okay? You spaced out again?”
“Sorry?” Anna looked up to meet her friends concerned eyes.
“Are you okay?” Her friend asked again.
Anna studied her concerned friend, before replying, “Don’t worry about me Liz.” Anna walked over to her friend, and sat beside her on her small bed. “I’m fine.”
“It is my job to worry about you, Anna ...” She hesitated, as if contemplating over her thoughts. “How are you holding up?”
“Okay.” Anna hastily got off the bed, and towards her desk.
“You don’t seem like it.” Liz said, joining her.
How was one supposed to feel after the death anniversary of their parents? Parents that supposedly died in front of them, but of whom they have no recollection of? Anna struggled to dig into the past, and recall who the murderer was. Who was the person that so savagely shattered her joyous childhood? “I am fine.” Anna stated looking into Liz’s light blue eyes. “And we need to get to school.”
“But...” Liz pouted whining like a toddler.
“No. Let’s go.” Grabbing Liz by the arm, Anna dragged her outside of the squeaky old house and into the mouth of the brisk fall wind . . .
