Dom's POV
I shot awake to the feeling of something cold. Of course. I was back on the cement floor again. In front of the stage. I got up and walked towards it to check if the wall was still there. Unsurprisingly, it was. I'm just so confused right now. One minute I'm laying on top of the stage with Y/N in my arms, and the next minute I'm back on the cold concrete, alone. Just then I began to hear footsteps. Mum? When did my mum get here? My mum appeared on the stage with my Dad, Iz, and Jem. She began talking, it was more of a whisper so I couldn't really hear at first but I scooted closer to hear her. "Hello Dominic. My beautiful son, I brought something" she began. "A mother held her new baby and very slowly rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while she held him, she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be."I felt a tear release from my eye and scurry down my face. I recognized these words more than anything. My favorite book as a child, my mum would always read it to me before bed. "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch.
She continued,
"The baby grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew until he was two years old, and he ran all around the house. He pulled all the books off the shelves. He pulled all the food out of the refrigerator and he took his mother's watch and flushed it down the toilet. Sometimes his mother would say, 'this kid is driving me CRAZY!'
But at night time, when that two-year-old was quiet, she opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor, looked up over the side of his bed; and if he was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. While she rocked him she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be."As she said these words I felt something in my left hand. I looked down to see my Nana's Saint Christopher necklace. Something so important to my family. I let more tears slip out as she continued reading.
"The little boy grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew until he was nine years old. And he never wanted to come in for dinner, he never wanted to take a bath, and when grandma visited he always said bad words. Sometimes his mother wanted to sell him to the zoo!
But at night time, when he was asleep, the mother quietly opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up over the side of the bed. If he was really asleep, she picked up that nine-year-old boy and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while she rocked him she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be."And now as I looked down, the emptiness in my right hand was replaced by a ring. An emerald. Jem's favorite.
"The boy grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew until he was a teenager. He had strange friends and he wore strange clothes and he listened to strange music. Sometimes the mother felt like she was in a zoo!
But at night time, when that teenager was asleep, the mother opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor and looked up over the side of the bed. If he was really asleep she picked up that great big boy and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. While she rocked him she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be."I looked back to my left hand. The Saint Christopher necklace was gone, but it was instead replaced by a stuffed animal. A small stuffed elephant. Man I haven't seen that thing in years. Iz used to carry it everywhere she went as a toddler. We lost it at a theme park years and years ago though and I hadn't seen it since. She eventually got over to it but I knew it was special to her.
"That teenager grew. He grew and he grew and he grew. He grew until he was a grown-up man. He left home and got a house across town. But sometimes on dark nights the mother got into her car and drove across town. If all the lights in her son's house were out, she opened his bedroom window, crawled across the floor, and looked up over the side of his bed. If that great big man was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while she rocked him she sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be."Her voice began to break as she spoke these words. I looked into my right hand and sure enough the ring had been replaced. This time by a green tortex guitar pick. On my lap sat a small Beatles ukulele. The same one that perched on my lap just hours after I was born.
"Well, that mother, she got older. She got older and older and older. One day she called up her son and said, 'You'd better come see me because I'm very old and sick.' So her son came to see her. When he came in the door she tried to sing the song. She sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always..."My Mum's whispers now turned into quiet cries as she spoke.
"But she couldn't finish because she was too old and sick. The son went to his mother. He picked her up and rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And he sang this song:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my Mommy you'll be."Her quiet cries turned into loud sobs.
"When the son came home that night, he stood for a long time at the top of the stairs. Then he went into the room where his very new baby daughter was sleeping. He picked her up in his arms and very slowly rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while he rocked her he sang:
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be.Rest now my angel pie, but please come back soon. We love you."
And with that, my mum and family slowly walked off the stage, as I began to drift back off to sleep with my mum's words echoing through my head. I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be.
Y/N POV
"Rest now my angel pie, but please come back soon. We love you." You awoke to hear whispers and slight sniffling across the room. You sat up to see Dom's mother sitting in the chair next to his bed with Izzie, Jem, and Justin standing around the bed. "Hello darling, I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you," Sam said. "Justin why don't you take the girls to the cafeteria for a bit, you all must be starving since we haven't eaten since we got here. I'll eat later I want to talk to Y/N for a bit." The rest of Dom's family left the room as Sam walked over to me. "Let's talk Y/N."
