All I see is dust. The tree I spent the better half of my childhood in disappeared as fast as my love for my ex-best friend. I try to sort through the ash thinking maybe it didn't burn. Maybe it just fell and got buried by the ash. Not ready to face the truth that my one safe place, the light in all the darkness could be gone forever from my life. No matter how much I dig or search, the realization that my one light has truly been snuffed out by the fire, both figuratively and literally is getting as close as can be. I finally sit back onto my ankles, accepting that one of the only things I truly treasure is gone.
I get up and choose to go back inside and pack my backpack with the rest of my things, once I'm finished I call Annabelle.
"Annabelle, come on, we're gonna be late," I shouted.
"Yes I'm just putting on some makeup," she replies.
What kind of a fourteen year old girl needs makeup? I decide against my better judgment not to argue with her and I start heading towards the door. There's no way I'm being late because of her.
"Um honey you should probably wash up before going," Mom says.
"Why?" I reply.
"Go look in the mirror sweetie."
I make my way to the bathroom, but can't get in because Annabelle is still in there. I bang on the door until she finally opens up, but when she does I know something is wrong. The second she looks at my face she looks like a deer in headlights.
"Uhm you got a little, whoops a LOT of stuff on your face"
she said.I grunt and pushed past her towards our small mirror sitting on the sink.
"Oh my god!"
As I'm looking in the mirror I can barely even see my face. I am covered in the ash from digging earlier. I grab a towel from under the sink and wet it to wash my face. I spend the next few minutes trying to scrub burnt umber and ash off my face but even after I'm done, I'm still looking at Cinderella in the mirror. I try scrubbing for a little longer before I just give up.
"Come on we need to go, we're already running late," I shouted to Annabelle. On the way to the front door for the second time mom stopped me again.
"Come over here, you still have dirt on your face. What were you doing, taking a bath in the fireplace?"
"No mom, I was just doing some cleaning outside, there was still a little ash on my hands when I touched my face," I replied.
After mom cleaned up my face, I left for school. Annabelle caught up to me once I was about half way there, panting like she just ran a marathon. I thought about asking her why she was so out of breath but chose to watch my surroundings instead. Out of the corner of my eye I see a giant tree, it has to be the size of the wall or maybe even double! I was so fascinated by it that I decided to point it out to Annabelle. "Hey, check out that tree over there," I said while pointing at the tree.
"Wow, that's a pretty big one, it's got to be the same size as the wall."
"That's exactly what i was thinking!"
We both start laughing. I love that me and my sister have that connection. We walk the other half of the walk to school in silence. Once we are standing in front of the school we do our secret handshake. Our secret handshake starts with a fist bump rather than a normal handshake, then we bump hips (Plus a few more moves but it's secret.) and at the end we do our power pose jump for laughs. Once we're done we both walk away giggling.
