"Lexi! Lexi! Lexi!" yelled Sarah as she dashed toward me waving a tan paper in the air. She seemed pretty excited for whatever she was about to show me. That always fascinated me about her. She was always excited about something. A real optimist. Not that I was a pessimist but she would literally always be happy. That was one of the many reasons I loved her so much. She was like my sister. We were so close we told each other everything. Just as she is about to demonstrate now.
As I stop her from knocking me over I ask, "What! What! What!"
She smiles. "Oh. Sorry. I'm just... I got in."
A little confused I ask, "To what?"
She slaps my arm. "What else silly? The League." Oh. The League. As in.... The Soccer League! Omg... Does she know what this means? This is huge for her! We have been trying to get in The League for years! She finally got in. I am so happy for her. She is going to be a Soccer Champion! This is huge!
"Oh my Gosh that is Amazing Sarah! I am so happy for you! You are going to be a sensation! A champion! A-"
"Ok I get it Lex. I got in." she interrupted. Her attitude about it worried me. Shouldn't she be jumping up and down and squealing in glee like she was a second ago? This definitely wasn't like her.
"Why aren't you making a huge deal out of it? This is what you've wanted for, like, forever right? You finally get your dream. What's wrong? Did something happen?" I ask. Hopefully nothing happened though. That would be bad. If I have to beat someone up, I will.
She frowned. "Nothing it's just... what if you didn't get in? I can't be a champion if my other half isn't. I just can't."
I laugh. "What are you talking about? You got in to The League. I should be the last thing on your mind. If I don't get in, which apparently I have more faith in me than you do, you will still be a champion! And I will still be by your side 24/7 babe. And you know it."
She smiles weakly. "I know it's just... I really want us both to make it."
"I get it. So do I." I say. "So does Jaxon know yet?"
"No. I haven't seen him yet. Want to do it with me? We meet after school at the gate to go to get some sushi today. Wanna tag along?" she asks in a pretty convincing tone. But I can't go. I don't want to impose on her life with her boyfriend. I always feel like the "third wheel". But every time I tell her that she just denies it by saying "No of course not. You're my best friend. Of course you're not the 'third wheel' ". It's utterly amazing how she thinks a best friend can't be a "third wheel" and just random acquaintances are. The best friend is always the odd man out!
"Um, no. You two have fun though babe. I don't feel like watching you two gawk at each other while I try not to throw up my raw fish and avocado wrap, thanks." I say half joking. I don't order a raw fish and avocado wrap.
She stamps her foot angrily and glared at me. "This is my winning party! I'm inviting some other friends to join and I will definitely not be gawking at Jax nor will he be gawking at me! Actually, I can't speak on his behalf so..."
I shove her playfully. "Oh my goodness Sarah. Ok, well... If there is going to be other people there... I guess I could go for a little-" I got cut off by something squeezing me to hard for me to breath. That "something" is Sarah. I managed to squeeze out. "Sarah. You're... hurting... me..."
She jumped off untangling me like she has just been burnt. "Sorry honey. I was just so happy. This is like one of the best days of my life. I love you so much Lexi. You know that?"
