Violeta Stone's phone vibrated in her sweatshirt pocket.
She already knew who the text was from - she could see Lilian Parker a few yards away, head bent as if in boredom , leaning against the brick wall of the school. As if sensing Violeta's gaze, Lilian glanced up, a smirk dancing on her lips. She tilted her head in question.
Violeta stifled a groan as she checked her messages.
8:05 AM
Lilian
I thought you said you could do it, Letta. Am I wrong?
Violeta wiped her sweaty palms on her jeans before replying.
8:05 AM
Violeta
No. I can. Just give me time.
Lilian raised a single eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest. The challenge in her gaze was unmistakeable as she nodded in the direction of Sunny Evans.
Sunny beamed, noticing. "Hey, Lilian!" She called, ever cheerful. Then she spotted Violeta and began to bounce. "Letta! Come on over, I want to show you something."
Violeta walked close, feeling leaden, as if weighed down by something. "Sunny...there's something I need to tell you."
"What?"
"I...we can't. Be friends anymore."
"What?" Sunny's confusion was etched into every line of her face.
"I said," Violeta snapped quickly - because this was like pulling off a bandaid, right? "That we can't be friends any longer."
"I don't understand." Sunny looked crestfallen.
"You wouldn't." Violeta sneered, turning on her heel to stomp towards Lilian. Hot tears burned her eyes, and she swept them away mercilessly.
Lilian looked pleased. More than pleased, in fact.
"You lovely girl, Leta." Lilian said, sweet as anything. "I'm sorry, but we can't be friends, either."
This was betrayal in the worst form.
