The birds were chanting in an uncanny manner. The dark patches of clouds above my head were being tormented by lightening. I was waiting for the clouds to shed their tears. My desperation to feel the coolness of rain grew as time passed by. The only thought which clutched my mind was that of Neil. I needed to distract myself from my feelings. I kept rewinding the scene in my head with him.
"Nina, I love you. Please don't do this." His hands framed my face as his restlessness grew.
"You have to move on. This was never going to work anyway. I have to move to another city. It's how the system works."
"I will move there. I will follow you. I love you." He planted kisses all over my face, he spared no effort to make me stay.
"You can't. You have another life you have to think about now. Don't abandon her before she's even born." He knew what I was referring to and the creases near his eyes seemed to soften a little bit.
"I don't know what to do." His eyes watered. I pulled him into an embrace and moved my fingers through his hair.
"Yes, you do baby. You do know."
I woke by a sound. It sounded like a wild animal, an injured and wailing animal. It was the kind of sound that made your skin tingle and made you press your hands to your ears and scream for it to go away. Whoever the source was, he wasn't very close.
I was surrounded by darkness. Complete and utter darkness, but I had a feeling that I wasn't alone. I could hear the slow and steady breaths of whoever was in the room along with me. A sharp pain struck me as I tried to lift my head from the floor. It was probably the after-effect of whatever they had injected me with. It felt like an enormous rock attached to the back of my head.
"Hello?"
"Mia, is that you?" Lauren. Relief washed over me as I heard her voice.
"Lauren? Oh my god, are you okay?"
"Yes! My hands and legs are bound. What about you?" I was so busy processing the surrounding darkness that I didn't notice my hands were tied too, along with my legs.
"Same. How long have we been here?" I whispered.
"Two to three hours is what I'm guessing. I'm not sure, I came back to my senses a while back too."
"IS ANYBODY OUT HERE?" I yelled as loud as I could. Lauren tuned along with me but silence came back as an answer.
Nothing could be done in the situation that we were in. If I managed to get hold of something sharp then I might have been able to cut the rope loose but that seemed unlikely considering how dark the room was and the abductors weren't so stupid that they'd leave sharp objects lying around in the room.
"Sit tight, Lauren. We just have to wait." I said and leaned against the wall, planning out a number of strategies in my head. It was not the first time I found myself to be in such a situation.
My eyes opened at once as I heard footsteps approaching. "Lauren, are you there?"
"Yes, I hear them coming too."
