Three weeks had passed and Imani hadn't talked to Michael

Three weeks had passed and Imani hadn't talked to Michael. He had done everything to try to get her to talk to him. Text, call, FaceTime. He even put gifts in her locker every once in a while but she still refused. At the bottom of her heart she knew it was petty, but her pride and ego wouldn't let her admit it.

"Imani?" Asia said. It was an early Monday morning and they were at her house, getting ready for the school day.

"Hm?" She hummed in answer, not looking back as she was brushing out her hair.

"You know you can't keep ignoring Michael forever, right?"

"I've been doing it for this long, who says I can't go a lil longer?"

"Me." Asia got walked over to her and leaned her back against the vanity. "You know he meant no harm by not telling you, just forgive him. For me?"

Imani side eyes her before rolling her eyes. "Fine! Now let's go to school before we're late."

Asia squealed before tightly hugging Imani resulting in Imani having to pry her off of her.

When they got inside the building they saw Jay, one of Michael's best friend's, standing around. He lifted his head when he noticed them walking up to them.

"Wassup?" He asked and they both shrugged nonchalantly.

"Nothing much." Imani stated. "Have you see Michael?"

"Naw, I was actually gonna ask you cause I haven't heard from him since Friday."

She furrowed her brows. It wasn't like Michael not to answer texts or phone calls.

Unless...

Quickly, she whipped her phone out of her pocket and shot him a quick "where you at" text. She put her phone away and continued talking regularly.

While they were talking, an announcement came over the PA system:

Imani Rowe, Asia Quintanilla, and Jay Campbell please come down to the office immediately.

They all looked at each other in confusion. Why would they all have to go to the office? They hadn't done anything bad, right.

"Well I guess we should get going?" Asia suggested and they all nodded. While they were walking, student gave them weird looks.

"Who the fuck are y'all looking at?" Imani said to herself. When they stepped into the office, the principal was standing there with a solemn look on her face.

"Follow me please." She said plainly. They all looked at each other, before cautiously following her. She led them into a conference room and motioned for them to sit, which they did.

"You gonna tell us why you called us in here?" Jay asked while raising a brow.

She looked at them all sadly before finally talking. "You are all friends with Michael Jackson, correct?"

They all nodded. "Well we were just informed that on Friday he was rushed immediately to the hospital. He is in critical condition as of now."

That's when Imani's world came crashing down.

Asia gasped. Jay muttered "fuck" constantly. Imani just sat there stunned, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

"We'll allow you to go visit him if you would like." She finished with, "I'm really sorry."

When they got to the hospital, the receptionist looked up at them with a warm smile.

"Hello! How can I help you guys today?"

"We need to visit a patient. Michael Jackson." Imani said through tears.

The receptionist typed something on her computer before looking back up at them. "Mr. Jackson is only allowed to see family as of right now-"

"Please!" Imani begged. "I have to see him. I'm begging you."

She looked at them with sad eyes before sighing deeply. "I suppose it would be alright. He's in room 4A."

They thanked her before walking to the elevator. There was an eerie silence as they walked down the hall to Michael's hospital room. They knocked on the door and Ms. Jackson opened it, tears staining her cheeks as well.

Imani looked over on the bed and say Michael. There were many machines hooked up to him as well as an oxygen mask in his face. She sat on the chair next and slowly enveloped their fingers together.

"He talked about you a lot." Ms. Jackson said while sitting next to her. "I believe that he really loved you."

"I feel as though it's all my fault." Imani whispered. "He told me he was sick, and instead of supporting him, I was mad at him. I'm so fucking stupid."

"It's not your fault, baby." Ms. Jackson reassured her . "Everyone does things there not proud of, we just gotta learn from it."

Imani nodded and brushed a tear from her eye. They all sat in a comfortable silence before a sound they never wanted to hear broke it.

The flatline.
