Tw: Topic of death.
(This is going to be quite a short chapter)
🌙

The night is quiet & streets empty, most stores are closed and roads were more or less lit up by road lamps. Finn takes in the peace, possibly being the last he'll experience when he gets home.

The soundless night is cut short, broken by a series of cries, startling him causing him to slow down a little. Finn views outside the pitch dark park, curiously trying to find the source of the sobs that quieten down. It seems some what familiar as he gets out his car, placing it in park and turning off the engine.

A little over the horizon, Finn could notice a slender figure plunge into the bushes below them. Fighting the urge to ignore the silhouette he reluctantly approached them while thinking about their loneliness.

"Need help?" Finn says cautiously, trying not to add to her frustration and agony to what now appeared like a girl. Handing her a fresh tissue, he sits beside her.

She takes the tissue quivering and mustered up enough strength to force herself to say thanks with a shaky tone. With that British accent and short wavy hair Finn could immediately recognise the new mysterious friend he had made.

"No problem. Are you okay?" 'Dumb question.' The voice in his head says. Of course she isn't okay.

"No, not exactly." She sniffs. "Sorry, again. You should go home, it's late."

"And leave you alone?" He catches the gaze of her sore eyes. "Nobody's expecting me. Long fucking day, hm?"

"Real long." There's a quiet pause between the two. "But, stay. Please."

"Sure," A warm feeling ignites, to know somebody wants his company. "If you don't mind me asking - why are you here, the park, alone?"

"I left the police station not too long ago and wandered out here." She responds. "And you?"

"Oh-" He pauses, trying to make up a quick lie. "My dad took me to dinner and I went back earlier to drive around." Finn shrugs, hoping that the lie was good enough to buy. He watches her face, her eyes glossy. "...D'you remember the last thing you said to him?"

"It was an argument. I think I brought up his work and he started to act weird. But I didn't say goodbye." Sorrow fill her teary eyes. Maybe if she did say goodbye, would she have been able to deal with his leaving easier? "They took me to identify a body. But I-I couldn't, I felt sick a-and..." Millie puts her head in her hands, the tears finally being able to pour out. She couldn't bare to relive that memory again, it hurt too much to remember of what only little she had.

A subtle hand is adjusted on her back, gentle strokes soothing her, giving her sense of comfort and remorse.
"I'm sorry." Was all he thought to try comfort her.

Millies sobs calm down as she tries to get herself together. She wipes her tears away and raises her head.
He removes his hand from her back and puts it on her trembling hand.

They're eyes meet, locked together. The feeling of his hand on top hers sends a shiver runs up her spine.

"You did nothing wrong, Millie. His death had nothing to do with you, I promise." She feels at ease after taking one deep breath.

A buzz from her phone pulls them apart, quite sudden and he also removes his hand. She checks her phone to see five previous messages from before, from Grace and Sadie, asking where she is.

She curses. The time is 11:57 and her friends would be worried.

"Schools called?"

"No," she responds shortly. "It's my friends, they're looking for me."

"Should I give you a ride back?" She tries her best not to show her smile quickly approaching her face.

"If that's okay with you," She answers, glad she didn't shout the words out in a shrill.

-

They walk over to the nearby car, slamming the door shut as they both enter. Finn starts up the engine while Millie buckles her belt. He starts to drive, Millie admiring the starry night sky.

It's dumb to get into a stranger car, but she just did. But this has to be different, so she sits there in total silence asking herself the same question over and over again. The blank expression on her face slightly begins to frown.

"Are you okay?" She snaps out of the daze before shrugging.

"I'm in a car with a complete stranger," She scoffs to herself. "I don't even know your name."

"You don't need someone's name to be ...friends with someone. Most people come up with nicknames."

"Why can't I know your real name? Is there something you're not telling me?" She teases with a smirk.

He clears his throat. "Am I going the right way?"

"Okay, I get it. You're a runaway who has to keep their identity secret because you're in deep shit with the police force."

"That's...oddly descriptive." He says before revealing the burning question. "My name is Finn."

"Hm."

"What?"

"Nothing. It sounds familiar."

He's moments away from stopping the car, as finally, she's back where she wanted. "Thanks for taking me back." She smiles, something Finn won't forget. "We should meet another time for a drink. We should meet tomorrow."

"Sure, I'll be there." She's about to leave when he stops her, a gentle touch on the arm. "Could I have your number? To let you know if I can't come or ...anything." It's a risk - not just for him but for other people.

She chuckles. "Why not." A toothless grin finally makes its way onto her face, as she takes his phone and exchanges her number.

A goodbye is the last he hears from her, before he driving off from campus. A mix of emotions, overwhelm him. Guilt. Joy. But his all thoughts are surrounded by her,
