Rays of sunlight peek through the curtain warming the side of my face, making me pinch my eyes more shut. An inhumane groan leaves me as my body decides to stretch itself. This is usually how I wake Elora up from my room. She's probably still asleep from our Disney movie marathon last night. She hated watching the 1940 Pinocchio movie and sighed heavy every five minutes throughout it.
I walk into the bathroom and brush my teeth while thinking what we have to do today. Multi-tasking at its finest. I prepare my shower and peel off my pink cupcake patterned pants and my grey Tangled t-shirt. My favourite jammies. As I step in, the hot water invades my body and relaxes muscles that I didn't even know were tense. It really has been a long week. Just then the bathroom door opens and Elora practically drags herself in.
"Why are you wearing a bird's nest on your head?" I ask, noticing the mess on her head.
"What?" she yawns, clearly still half asleep, "You're one to talk," she laughs. I see my reflection on the white tiles in the shower and notice that I have a matching bird's nest on my head. "What are we thoing thothay?" she asks with her toothbrush doing its duty in her mouth.
"Grocery shopping. Not actually, just need to get a few things. Maybe we can go out for coffee with the boys later?"
"Sounds good," she says and spits what remained in her mouth into the sink. I get out and wrap myself in my towel and make it only a couple of inches away from her when she swipes her finger in the center of my behind and teases, "Credit card."
"Bro! You're so weird!" I laugh at her stupid tactics but like I said, what would I do without her.
I walk into my room, which has now been warmed by the sun, and gaze as my disaster of a cupboard looking for what would match the weather today. I've always had a tendency of matching my clothes with the weather. My black acid wash jeans fit my legs perfectly and my grey baggy t-shirt hung gracefully from my shoulders. My gold watch hugs my wrist and stud earrings compliment my ears. No make-up needed.
While Elora got herself ready, I used the time to have the most important thing of my day, a cup of tea. When we decide that we are done and ready, we head over to the mall. The silence in the car becomes a deafening one so I switch on the radio. The song 'This is what you came for' by Rihanna comes on and our eyes meet in disbelief.
"What a throwback!" we say simultaneously. We sing and dance, giving the others around us live concert until we reach our destination. We make our way to the grocery store inside and pick up a basket of our few things.
"Hey, let's call the boys," she leans in as if she doesn't want anyone to hear.
"Like right now? You know what they'd do if they were here. Besides, we're meeting them in like two hours. What's two hours, right?" I say while picking up a tray of eggs.
"Argh, it won't be so bad, I'm gonna call them." She slips away, before I can respond, to the junk food section knowing she would bring back with enough chips to feed the country. Just as I predicted, she did, carrying at least seven packets of chips, she walks back to me holding all the gazes around her.
"They're on their way, Josh has to fetch Adrian first," she says while effortlessly opening a packet of chips and stuffing some in her mouth. She makes it look so delicious I had to join in. We spend a little time window shopping after leaving the groceries in the car, looking at things we can't afford, staring at people to make them feel weird and pressing all the numbers in the elevator.
We walk past a store that has the most beautiful emerald green dress I'd ever seen. It's an a-line shape, off-the-shoulder velvet dress with long sleeves. The delicate material has a perfect glow under the light and I couldn't help but wonder what it would look like on me. It would take more than six months savings to buy this dress. The store itself, let alone the dresses, looks so elegant. There was no way I could afford that.
Suddenly I felt Elora's eyes burn the side of my face until I hear the most familiar shout from across the crowd, "Oh goorrllss." The boys are here and Elora's cheeks looks at red as mine felt as people began staring at us.
Joshua Davino and Adrian Lopez, our best friends since high school. Such idiots. They never leave us alone, always follow us around and have to be a part of everything we do. I watch them casually close the distance between us.
Josh's grey eyes matches Elora's and his dark hair matches Adrian's. His broad shoulders show gracefully from the shirt he's wearing. The muscles in his arms bunch as he runs his fingers through his hair. His sharp jaw and high cheekbones stand out while he chews the piece of gum in his mouth.
Adrian, matching Josh's footsteps, walks beside him. He looks like Hercules himself. He has no trouble exposing his godlike figure through anything he wears. Right now he dons a tight black t-shirt making all the girls gawk at him. He winks at one of them as they walk past. What a simp. He has blue eyes, the blue of a cloudless evening sky. You'd get lost in them if you stared for too long.
His distinct jaw and straight nose add to the list of reasons why girls drool over him. Elora and I still think they're disgustingly annoying.
"I'm only here for the coffee," Josh says by way of greeting.
"Why do you guys always have to shout for us like that?" Elora hits Adrian on the shoulder, "Especially in public?"
"Forget that. Why you do you have to shout it in the voice of Gru from Despicable Me?" I laugh at how Elora's cheeks reddened.
"Well I mean it's kind of our job to embarrass you in public," Adrian smirks and claps Elora on the shoulder.
The boys look at each other and begin sniggering at some inside joke. Their smiles and idiocy could brighten up anyone's day. After coffee we decided to take a walk through a clothing store when something catches Elora's eye. It's a bright blue bikini and I just know this isn't the best time.
We walk over to the bra section and we check out a few of the sets on display. All pretty colours and patterns, some with unusual colours and some seriously seductive. Maybe I should buy myself a pair. One in particular looks like a mosquito net and who knows, maybe I'll catch something in it.
Elora stops in front of me and holds up her hands, "Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?" I ask, straining my ears to hear what she's hearing.
"It's quiet," she points out.
Oh no.
"Too quiet," I add.
We look around trying to find where the boys are when we heard more sniggering coming from the other side of the bra section. Hesitantly we follow. When we found them, our eyes look upon two grown men, each holding a bar against their chest, laughing at how they look.
"See what I mean," I nudge Elora and we both burst out laughing.
"Mine are bigger," I hear Josh say. They still haven't seen us.
"I should have known," Elora groans into her hands as a few ladies walk past and give them concerned looks.
"No, Adira's are bigger," Adrian says.
What? How does he- oh my God.
"Hey cabrones, put those away, you guys look retarded," Elora says and shoos then away. My face heats from what Adrian said and I feel the colour coating my cheeks.
"They actually look beautiful on me," Josh says smugly, "Movies and face masks at your place?" he suggests and they all look to me. My heart began pounding and I avoided their gazes, especially Adrian's.
"Yes please. I need something to take my mind off what I just saw," I say jokingly.
After we get home and settled in, the boys chose the face masks and we the movies. Popcorn, slushies, couch fort and a John Wick marathon, what better way to spend a Saturday night.
