Chapter 1
"Just tell us what you know Lily"
"I did"
"You didn't Lily."
"So what?"
"So, this is not a game."
"Who said it was, Marty?"
Officer Torres' nostrils flared at the sound of his first name. Lily scoffed. Lily was fearless. Officer turned to me.
"Thea... What happened?"
I sunk down in my chair, Lily shot me a nasty look. I tried to clear my head but it overflowed, my eyes did the same. Drizzles of salt water escaped my eyes.
"I don't know officer." I replied.
Officer Torres got up from the table and left the little white room. I could tell by the way he was tugging on his brown hair he was mad. No, not mad, annoyed. As soon as the door slammed behind him my eyes sought the comfort of Lily's.
"Lily..." my voice was choked up and the tears were coming faster. Before I could get a word out Lily stopped me.
"Shut up Thea. They're watching us" she barely uttered the words but I heard them clear as crystal. She stared into the mirror across from the table with a rebellious glint in her eyes. How could two people look identical yet be so different on the inside? I hope someday I'll figure it out. Lily and I shared our looks; dirty blonde hair, freckles scattered our noses, blue green eyes... But there was something different about our eyes. Lily's were sparked with mischief and ideation, while mine were duller, with a low gleam of curiosity and longing. That was the only difference in appearance between us though, besides the hints in our eyes for all anyone knows I'm Lily and Lilys Thea. But of course, I could never be her, I'm her shadow, that's as close as I'll get.
"Why the hell are you staring at me like that?" Lily's voice broke my thoughts.
"Sorry" I muttered wiping away the tears left lingering on my face.
"Just don't. It's weird... C'mon." Lily got up from her metal chair and slammed it against the table.
"Wha-" I looked at her in confusion.
"Shut up. We're leaving." I stood up and followed her out the door. Officer Torres stopped us halfway.
"Where do you think you're goin?"
"Home, this is bullshit and you can't keep us here." Lily shoulder checked him and walked out the sliding doors of the police station, I followed behind her and scanned the parking lot for our blue Jeep.
"Let's go home."
"Lily what the hell."
I was in the passenger seat and desperate for an explanation. What happened on there? Why wasn't she telling the cops anything? What does she have to hide?
"Thea don't start. We'll figure it out."
The car was warming up and defrosting I pulled my coat off my arm rested on the car door I glanced at my arm, even in this light I could make out the bruises.
