One

The sound of the bell ringing fills my ears. I look across the room and am met by my best friend giving me an excited smile. We both rush out of the classroom. It's the end of the school day, which means the cast list for the musical has been posted. Although I've been in multiple plays, I have only been in one other musical in my two prior years of high school, so I'm not too sure I got in.
We reach the billboard where it's posted, although we can hardly see it considering the number of people in front of us. I grab my friend's wrist and try to push through the sea of people.

"What are you doing? Just wait your turn!" He tells me.

"You're just saying that because you're the stage manager, you didn't have to audition." I sarcastically roll my eyes.
We wait for the crowd to clear and finally are able to read the cast list.

I turn to George, "I got in! I did it!" I shriek while jumping up and down.

"You did!" he cheers me on. "You got a lead and two smaller parts!"

I give him a perplexed look before responding.

"Lead? One of the main people?" He nods. "No, no this can't be right."

"Have you ever seen Newsies? Katherine is the love interest of Jack. It's a pretty big role," he says excitedly. "I'm proud of you."

I give him a smile of thanks, unsure if I will be able to handle the pressure of having a lead role.

"Y/n!" Minx jogs over to me.

"Hi, minx! I see you're in the cast too!" I congratulate her.

"Fuck yeah!" She turns to George, "Hey George,"

"Hi, Becca." He responds.

She gives him the slightest bit of acknowledgment before turning her attention back to me.

"I see you got the role of Katherine, you know you're gonna have to kiss the person who plays Jack, right?" She snickers.

I look back up to the call list to see who it could be.

"Wilbur," I mutter in an annoyed tone. "Of course he got the lead." I roll my eyes in annoyance, he got the lead three, now four, years in a row.

Minx scoffs, "Good luck." Before leaving to catch her ride home.

I look back at the cast list to see who else is in the cast when I hear someone running up from behind me. Another one of my friends, Tubbo, was eager to see if he made the list.

"Yes, I got in! And I even got Crutchie, he's my favorite!" I hold my hand up for a high-five to celebrate. "Sorry I'm late," he continues. "I had to get the poster board for our project."

We had a group project for history to create a poster of a historical event from any time in United Stated history.

"We should probably get started on the project," I say. "It's due in a week and we don't even know what we're researching yet."

And with that, we started the short walk to Tubbo's house and saying goodbye to George.

We begin to bring out all the supplies we'll need. Scissors, glue, markers, etc. We sit down at the kitchen table ready to brainstorm on what to research.

"We could do the Louisiana Purchase," I suggest. "That's kinda interesting."

Tubbo groans. "Ugh, no. Everyone already knows about that, no one will want to listen to our presentation. Plus, the teacher's giving points for creativity and uniqueness."

He has a point, now that I think of it, we learned about that last year. We sit in silence, pondering ideas.

"I got it!" I turn my attention to him. "Why don't we do the Newsboys' strike that happened in the late 1800s?"

"Why would we do that? I mean it sounds cool, but there are so many other interesting things to research." I reply

He looks deep in thought, trying to find the right words to persuade me. "Well, because we're going to be in the Newsies musical and that's what it's based on."

"It is?" I question.

He looks at me dumbfounded. "Wha- well, yeah. Haven't you seen Newsies?" when he gets no response, that answers his question. "How have you never seen Newsies? It's only like one of the most popular musicals ever."

I shrug. "I guess I've just never had a reason to watch it."

Tubbo walks over to the living room, grabbing the remote to turn on the television.

"Well, now you're going to have a reason! Both for our project and the musical." He pats the couch, motioning me to sit down.

"Shouldn't we be working on the project?" I ask

"Let's just say this is part of our research, plus you just have to watch it."

We spend the rest of the day watching Newsies and joking around, completely forgetting about our project.

I know this is a shorter one, but once we get further into the book they will be much longer :)
