And so modern witches were born,❞ the woman rasped. ❝ In lighting, and thunder, and rain. ❞ And as I stared up at her with my bright blue eyes, I felt the pang of recognition somewhere deep within. Little did I know what was yet to come.

Lindsey Kestrel was six when her mother died, leaving her in her grandmother's care, which led to leaving her to raise herself. But little did she know that no blood flowed through her veins. Instead, ichor inhabited her body and sent her soul into turmoil.

Lindsey Kestrel was sixteen when she changed her name to Mabel Kestrel, after her favorite actress. She was also sixteen when she started the Black Briar Society and became the most powerful modern witch in all of Salina, Kansas.

        That was 1952.

It is now 2010 and Mabel Kestrel's granddaughter has finally become of age. She is to join the sisterhood and follow in her mother and grandmother's footsteps. And she will betray them all--her sisters, her mothers, the entire coven. But this isn't the story of Marguerite Kestrel. This is the story of me, the boy that fell in love with her, and how I learned that it never ends well with witches.

Because I know how deep their bonds are forged. The blood of their enemies that stains their palms and laps at their ankles hooks you, and once you've had a taste of their poison, you feel that it belongs nowhere but your veins. They will crush their enemies and brand them with scars so vicious, because all that matters are the women that stand beside them, the one's who understand their fragile bones and can see the black smoke that lives inside of them. For how else is there to explain the way their eyes burn, and once you grow close to them, you can no longer tell if their light is of the stars or of a pyre.
