Louis isn't afraid to admit that he is afraid of thunder. He knows it is irrational, but he just hates how loud it is, and how what immediately follows can ultimately kill you if struck by it, so maybe he just has a fear of lightning. Rain in general just puts a damper on his normally sunny personality, which is why he picked a university in bright, sunny California. But as he unpacks his suitcases, he can't help but flinch every time he can hear the thunder crack through the sky.
"You sure you don't want to come out tonight, it should be really fun," and as if with perfect execution, a loud crack from the thunder outside made the entire building shake and the lights in Harry and Louis' shared dorm start to flicker. Louis winced as he gripped onto the t-shirt he had in hand as he unpacked.
"Yeah I'm good," He said placing the sloppily folded shirt into a dresser drawer. "But have fun being struck by lightning." He said with mock enthusiasm.
"You are being so dramatic," Harry claimed, walking over to the window where the curtains were shut. "It's just a sprinkle." He pulled them back as the wind picked up and the trees were visibly swinging back in forth with what looked like truck sized raindrops were falling at a vicious rate.
"Whatever you say," Louis mumbled under his breath as he moved his now empty suitcase under his bed.
"Well, I'm going to head out, don't wait up for me," Harry said making his way for the door. He had always been the more outgoing of the two friends. Though Louis was nothing close to being considered introverted, he just hated the rain. If it weren't raining apocalyptically outside he would have gone, but tonight he would much rather be tending to his unpacked dorm than drinking with a bunch of college kids.
Harry waved at his best friend before shutting the door leaving Louis alone with his two other unpacked suitcases. The two had been best mates since they were kids, they moved to America together to go to university and made it through their first year successfully, with little trouble. But, while Louis went home to visit his mum and sisters over the summer, Harry stayed for an internship and met Zayn, his current boyfriend, and as soon as Louis returned he noticed the two were inseparable. It was sickening if he was to be honest, but he knew his best friend was happy, so it didn't bother him too much.
With the dorm all to himself, he turned on his throwback Backstreet Boys/Nsync playlist and started to unpack the rest of his belongings.
Halfway through his last suitcase, and just as Bye Bye Bye was about to get into its final chorus, his music was interrupted by a text coming from his phone. He glanced and saw that Harry had texted him.
Forgot about my clothes in dryer # 3 downstairs. Get em for me please? Xx
With a huff of annoyance, Louis unplugged the aux cord from his phone and shoved it in the pocket of his sweats before grabbing Harry's blue laundry basket, his keys, and heading out the toward the elevator.
The doors to the elevator opened and he walked through the lobby, waving at familiar faces, people he had met in class or in the hall at some point last year. He made his way into the section that separated the main entrance, the information booth and the entrance to the laundry room. Two guys started swiping their keycard to enter, as the rain outside started to pound down.
"Might sound crazy, but it ain't no lie, baby bye bye bye," he sang to himself as he swung his lanyard with his non-basket holding hand. Just as he was about to walk into the laundry room, the lights flickered three times before turning off. He saw the door open and the two guys entered.
"Wait!" He heard someone yell from outside as they were about to close it. Louis saw the two exchange glances, about to let it shut.
"Don't close it on him!" Louis exclaimed, dropping the basket and his keys, and lightly jogging to the entrance. He moved the two guys out of the way, and the boy the voice belonged to came running into the building.
