Nate knew about all the supernatural beings. He knew of the original family, Silas, Katherina Petrova etc...he knew that a few people had heard of him as well. And most of those people who had known him had been only known moments before he had killed them.
And when he lands up in mystic falls, at first, no one has heard of him. But, when they figure out who he is, they planned to kill him together. They couldn't have a hunter that powerful.
