"Happy Birthday Ma," Nimit placed the cake and bouquet he brought for his mother on the small center table and pulled his mother into a warm embrace.

Priya smiled at her son through her unshed tears. He shook his head at her, "It's a happy day today Ma." She nodded at him and smiled happily.

Lighting up the wick of the candles, he guided her towards the table. She hesitated a little, the shimmer of the candle exuded the power she could never think about oppressing. Well, that's what she had been doing for the past few years anyway. The shimmer of both her life and the candle could only be oppressed by the person she had entrusted her life with and unfortunately, he did a great job at it.

Nimit hated being a bystander in his mother's story. Could he not help her, and if he did take the plunge, couldn't he fight till the end? His hands fisted on his sides unknowingly.

"Nimit?" He heard his mother's voice and smiled lightly at her. He held out the cake knife for her and gave her a reassuring look.

"The light won't go away until you stop believing in its goodness Ma," she caressed his cheeks and bent down to blow the candles. At least, there would be someone who would accompany her on this day.

"Not just this year Ma. Henceforth, all my time belongs to you." Nimit assured her. "Come on, make a wish now." He encouraged her only to stare back at her dark eyes, an expression hidden so deep within her conscience, he shuddered at the mere thought of it. Wishes, since when did they have the luxury to have one? They just had the blessing of getting every wish of their unfulfilled.

"I am sorry Ma." He said in a quiet voice and made her sit on one of the chairs lying around the living room. The chandelier overhead chimed just a little with the flowing wind. She laughed wryly, what was the difference between the wind and her?

No matter how much she tried, she could not do anything to shake his resolutions. She wanted to flow freely but in her quest, she had stumbled upon this calmness which in all its glory called out to her.

Her respite was short-lived though as a little wish crept in her heart and the endurance of the calmness shattered with its fulfillment, pulling Priya and Nimit into the ever-so-growing darkness.

Priya was disheartened for the wish wasn't accepted by the ones around her while Nimit felt sad for his mother. The wish, after all, was him all along.
