The school bell screamed like tortured hinges, it was an awful sound and the dark cold winter morning killed my mood even more. I slammed my blue locker door shut and fumbled with the key as Scarlett squealed in my ear. I didn't know whether to pay attention to her words or her heavy breath in my ear, that was tickly.
"This is GREAT! Can you believe it darling? Bloodwood Ball. I mean we are going to have the best time- like ever, ever, ever!" She giggled, twirling her curly blond locks in her fists excitedly. But to be honest, I didn't see what was so great. In fact, it was worse than I imagined. Every girl had to find their own dance partner and who would go with the new girl. I let out a sigh and let my head rest on the lockers as I squeezed my folder for some comfort.
"Look Scar...I think this is a terrible idea. You know, me going to the School ball. It's just too much." My black hair had fallen over my face, with my side bangs covering my left eye as a disguise. I groaned again. "Oh, c'mon you can go! You really don't need me to go with you. I just don't think I'm ready." I got out my lesson schedule and looked around at it, finding nothing that was interesting but just trying to look busy. She snatched the paper off my hands angrily.
"Stop trying to get away girl. You're going to be fine. Yes you're the new girl but it's no big deal- just think positive!" She stared at me furiously with sea blue eyes. Deadly eyes. She took a heavy step towards me. Than another. She moved closer, and I felt my legs shake as I looked into her eyes. Her warm hands reached up and I pulled back, though she was faster than I expected and grasped my hands, laughing as we walked. "Ms Trinity, you're going to be fine and that's final." She announced in a posh British accent, as she applied a thick coat of rosy red lipstick to her lips whilst, puckering her lips as she cat walked down the school hallway, hips colliding around anyone around her. I tried hard to hide my silent laughter.
"Scar, you really freaked me out big time earlier" I whimpered, stopping. There was something wrong with her. Something very WRONG.
"Oh c'mon. Stop being a chicken, girl. I'm simply, the same bubbly old me. Anyway your prince or shall I say prince charming awaits!" She giggled, bowing like a prince. I rolled my eyes, laughing. Here it goes again.
My shoes thudded on the hard floor as we turned the corner of the art block. The sound of students playing echoed from the playground, running, stomping and crying. No worries crossed their minds as they sneaked their way into trouble just to impress friends. The rhythmic creaking of swings went back and forth, and I could hear the car engines start to fail. I felt the teachers eyes tear into me hungrily like they were dying to eat me. Any second there was a risk, I could sense it. I looked to my right and saw the concrete crack three steps beside me with every step I took. What was going on? I stared at Scarlett with big worried eyes. hoping she'd give me some sort of answer.
"What's going on. I don't get it? The flowers drop dead as I walk past, Everyone here including the teachers stare at me as though they want eat me! That creepy guy ran away from me as soon as he saw my pupil and now the floors are cracking as I walk past? This is really freaking me out!" I glared at her, biting my lip. I was perfectly normal outside of school so what the hell was going on now. Scarlett flicked her hair and shuffled slightly away as she narrowed her eyes, lost in thought. She giggled nervously but there was a spark in her eyes, a hidden secret. I knew she was trying to keep hidden something. She let out a sigh and squeezed her fists to stop the shaking.
"You're hiding something from me, aren't you?" I mumbled upset, turning her head towards me. Her lips trembled as she shook her head first. Wow, she sucked at lying. "What? Yes, I mean no. Why would I do such a thing" She mumbled fast, looking down at her feet as her lips shook.
"The place is so DEAD. People are acting so DEAD. I'm serious, can you even see a hint of smile on anyone, or even the sound of laughter?" I sighed, wanting to take the anger out on something and change the subject. A gust of cold wind blew down my neck, making me shiver and I held my breath as I watched our surrounding. The howling wind echoed through the trees and dark clouds formed all around us blocking the bright sunshine that was there before. lightening flashed a few feet away from us. I could hear Scarlett's heavy breathing as she swallowed hard. I glared up at her trembling body that was rocking back and forth. Her face had turned into a shade of light purple and her eyes darted about in concern as if she was searching for a place to hide. She bit her lower lip as they quivered, as she spoke in the silence.
"Do not say that word. Ever again. No one want's to hear it." She breathed, as she stroked the tree beside us, the leaves fluttering in the wind. I grabbed her shoulders and spun her to face me.
"What do you mean by that? The word, dead? Are you serious?" I finished my sentence and swallowed, to get some moisture into my mouth. She shivered at the last word and closed her eyes. She stood frozen on the spot staring into space until I heard her suck in a gulp of air.
"Right, let's not talk about this. Shit, our science class is about to start in 2 minutes we got to go!" She shrieked, the pupils of her eyes widened as her eyes twitched. She started panting heavily tugging at the sleeve of my jacket to get moving. I could see the veins bulging out of her neck as she growled for us to leave this place. "Move" She hissed, flapping her hands around. I slung my arm around her neck and pulled her into the direction of the building.
"Chill, We will make it on time " I laughed. I felt her struggle restlessly and then I realised why, strutting out of the boys toilets walked out Ash, high-fiving his gangs while some other guy gave him a piggyback, his eyes fell onto me and Scarlett and they all burst into a roar of laughter, I quickly let go of Scarlett and she brushed down the tangles in her hair, and puckered her lips as she narrowed her eyes at them. Her cheeks scorched with embarrassment whilst she tamed her curly locks and spun on her heels, towards the posters on the wall. Damn, I just embarrassed her in front of her crush.
"That was so cool!" She said, as we walked into our classroom, passing the students waiting in the queue. I dropped my book onto the desk and took my seat whilst Scarlett smiled eagerly.
"Right, isn't that meant to be a bad thing since- actually never mind" I shrugged, there was no point I would just get myself into a mess. "Scar, pass me a pen please" I called over the other side of the classroom. The people in between us ducked down low as Scarlett's terrible aim went flying straight towards my eye. A dark figure flew in front of me and grabbed the pen. I looked up to thank him. It was Ash, smiling down at me. My fingers shook to take the pen off him and he chuckled as he placed it gently on the desk.
"Pleasure" He winked, as he made his way down to the classroom to take a seat. He flicked his own pen in a weird way and caught it, to get attention. Oh what a show-off. I turned my gaze to Scarlett and watched her smile dreamily. I don't know what she's seeing in him, I laughed silently.
"Is something funny Ms Devlyn?" The Teacher asked, cocking her head to one side as she watched me for an explanation.
"No sir, not at all" I replied, grinning.
