"Octavia Melody? You're up." A well dressed man called out, clutching a clipboard that listed everyone performing tonight. Octavia was last on the list. It was finally time for her to perform. After all the hours of sitting nervously and being swallowed by anxiety. It was time for her to show the world what she could do.
Walking out on the stage, she was nearly blinded by the large spotlights shining on her, her mulberry eyes scanned the audience as she walked to her spot with her trusty cello in hand and long jet black hair flowing behind her. Everyone in the audience was glued to her and her alone. Catching her eye was her Mother and Father, staring directly at her with a serious and stern expression.
"I can do this.. I can do this." Octavia thought to herself, seating herself and preparing her instrument to play. "I will win this."
Octavia let in a gentle inhale before closing her eyes, pressing the bow against her cello. After a slight pause, she began to play.
As she slid the bow against the stings, her eyes shot open in surprise and she cringed, a loud harsh beep ringing from her instrument. She stared in confusion at the cello. Starting to panic, she tried again, only for the loud beeping sound to ring out again, only getting louder and more intense.
Octavia noticed her father standing up from the crowd, his face not showing an expression of anger and hate Octavia immediately shut her eyes tight, panic now fully engulfing her body . "Octavia!" Her father shouted, his voice booming and echoing throughout the concert hall.
Octavia gasped and her eyes shot open once more, wildly looking around. She wasn't in the concert hall anymore, she was in her bedroom. Breathing a sigh of relief, she began to massage her brow in an attempt to rub away the shock of her odd nightmare.
"You got me again Alarm.." Octavia muttered, reaching over to turn the beeping machine off. "I really should change the sound you make, perhaps some Mozart? Or even-" Before Octavia could continue her conversation with her Alarm clock, her Father's voice echoed throughout the house.
"Octavia Melody! Wake up this instant! You will not miss your first day at the Academy!" He shouted. Octavia immediately shot out of bed and began to get ready, changing and fixing herself up at a speed that could almost be considered supernatural. "Good heavens! I completely forgot!" She exclaimed to herself, grabbing her cello case and out of her room, heading downstairs.
Walking down to the elegant and spacious main hallway was nothing new to Octavia, although she could see why any average person would be mesmerized. Paintings and trophies decorated the walls. After all, Octavia's father used to be a praised and highly talented musician himself.Used to be.
"Sorry Father, I must've slept in. I was spending all night practicing after all." Octavia said, moving to the kitchen to get some Breakfast. "Is that an excuse?" Octavia's father said, walking into the kitchen, Octavia able to see his face. His hazel eyes almost glaring at her. His stern frown complimented by a neatly groomed mustache.
"Of course not Father, I apologize." Octavia said, her voice devoid of any emotion that laid beneath. Her Father only replied with a nod, walking towards her, moving to close the cupboard she had opened. "You'll be late if you eat now, you should get going." He said, staring down at her with a serious expression."I understand. I'll leave at once." She said, moving to grab her cello case once again before heading towards the front door without another word from her Father. She opened the front door and walked towards the car, her driver waiting patiently by the passenger door for her. "Good Morning Ma'am. Ready to go?" The well dressed older man asked, offering a kind smile.
"Thank you Humphrey. I am." Octavia said politely, getting into the back of the expensive vehicle and gently placing her cello case down next to her as he opened the door for her.
The drive was nothing special. Just the usual silence. The only saving grace was the occasional chit chat Humphrey would have with Octavia during the ride. After what seemed like forever they arrived at their destination. Lakewood Academy.
Octavia stared in awe at the presence of the building. She could hardly believe it. All the hard work, the grueling hours practicing and playing for representatives of the School finally paid off. Octavia was finally in the school every musical prodigy wish they could be in, and was one step closer to her goal.
Suddenly though, her thoughts were interrupted by a gurgling in her stomach. She really wish she didn't have to skip Breakfast.
"Hungry Ma'am?" Humphrey inquired, shuffling around the front of the car before offering her an apple. "It's not much, but it's something." He said, offering another gentle smile. Octavia hesitantly accepted and took the apple, holding it in one hand and her cello case in the other.
"Thank you again Humphrey." Octavia said with a genuine smile on her face as he walked out of the car to open the door for her. "Have a good day Ma'am." He said to Octavia before leaving, Octavia starting to walk towards the imposing building.
Taking a bite of the apple Octavia let out a sigh of relief, the juicy apple tasting like heaven to her. She couldn't resist closing her eyes as she took the next bite.
"Gah!" A voice could be heard shouting. Before Octavia could look to see what the commotion was, she felt something heavy hit her and make her fall to the ground, her cello and apple flying to the floor in different directions.
Groaning and taking a few seconds to process what just happened, Octavia opened her eyes and sat up, seeing someone in front of her also on the floor, groaning in pain.
"Ah damn.. I'm so sorry." The girl mumbled, looking up, a pair of purple sunglasses being revealed under her neon blue hair. The girl began to stand up and offered her hand to Octavia. Octavia grabbed her hand and stood up, speechless and still trying to process what really happened to her. "I-"
"Ah crap, your instrument! Here let me get it for you!" The blue haired girl exclaimed, walking behind Octavia to a sight she couldn't see. Moving to see what the girl meant, Octavia froze and gasped, seeing her cello case opened, her cello and bow sprawled all over the concrete floor. It was at this sight that Octavia snapped back to reality.
"Why you! Move!" She exclaimed angrily, pushing the girl aside and moving to quickly grab her cello and bow. "Do you have ANY idea how expensive this is? How long my family has had this?" She asked in a harsh tone, turning her head to examine the girl who could've destroyed the pride and joy of her family.
Messy and unkept hair, cheap and worn down clothes, and nothing that even implied she came to this school.
"Hey Man, chill out! It was an accident!" The girl began a frown now apparent on her pale face.
Octavia couldn't control herself, it was almost life another side of her. Just thinking about what would happen if her cello was damaged, and what her father would do was enough to enrage, and frighten Octavia to the core. She grabbed the girl by the collar and stared at her. "This accident could've costed me my entire musical career!" She yelled, the girl now gripping her arm tight.
"G-Get off me!" She exclaimed, shoving Octavia back and curling her hands up into fists. "Don't you fucking touch me." She snarled, her tone making Octavia back off and realize what she had just done.
"I-I'm so sorry. I-" Octavia began, only for the girl to stop her.
"Don't even start, you're all the fucking same." She muttered, looking to see some staff walking over from the main entrance.
"You'll fit in just fine here.." She whispered, glaring at Octavia before walking away, one of the staff members following her inside the school building until they were out of sight.
Octavia could only stare and try and contemplate what just happened. Why did she snap like that to a complete stranger?
And who was that girl?
