Randy and I threaded through the crowd of the press to see the chief of police stating the recent murders. An hour had passed since I learned the news but it had barely settled in for me. Currently, Sidney was leading a group of us up the stone steps to onlook the sea of reporters. There was a buzz of excitement on campus due to this press conference, among other things.
"Chief Hartley-" A voice sounded loudly over the crowd- "Hi, Gale Weathers, author of the Woodsboro Murders. Do you think the killer will strike again?"
"We have no evidence that this is a serial killer. I'd like to read-"
"Can you tell us of any precautions that you're taking?"
"Well, first of all, we think that this is just an isolated incident. And we will be carrying out..."
Randy, Sidney, and I latched immediately onto the voice that spoke. A bitter expression stretched across my friends' faces. I folded my arms in response and watched Gale's every move. She hadn't changed in years. I looked over to Sidney, who was taking this much harder than any of us and leaned towards her.
"How've you been?" I whispered.
"Not great..." She sighed. "You're like... the only person I feel comfortable saying that to." She peeked over her shoulder at Derek, who was intently listening in on the press conference.
"I get what you mean," I leaned my head against Randy.
"That's the chick! The one who wrote a book about you!" Mickey grinned at us and held up a camera of his own. Film students.
Randy rolled his eyes and shoved the camera away from our faces. I guess he was still annoyed with Mickey. I felt Randy's arm snake around my waist and pull me closer to him. Though he won't stop saying this is all a coincidence, I can tell he's worried. I assume he won't let me leave his side until this blows over, too.
"I'm right here, you've got me," I whispered to him.
"I know-"
"You keep holding onto me as if I'll disappear. I see right through you, Meeks."
"Yeah, yeah," He rolled his eyes once more and grabbed my chin to kiss me.
I could hear Mickey gag in the background, "I'm gonna get closer. Get a room."
While Mickey stalked off, the sound of footsteps approached. "Hello girls, enjoying yourselves?" We turned to see a gaggle of sorority girls peering down at Sidney. None of which I knew.
"Hello sister Lois, Marcy" Hallie said eagerly.
"Hi, Sidney, (Y/n)" one of them chirped, the blondest of the group. I peered at Randy with wide eyes and he shrugged in response. "This must be flat-out hell for you two," she feigned remorse which caused the rest of the girls to nod in sympathy. "How are you holding up?'
"We manage," Sidney responded stiffly.
"It's really weird, isn't it? To think this fuss is all because of you!" I blinked, surprised at her bluntness, but she continued. "I mean, not directly, but in some six degrees of Kevin Bacon way!"
Before either of us could respond, a different sorority girl spoke, "Hallie, are you going to bring your little friend to our martini mixer tonight?"
"I have a lot of work tonight-"
Sidney was interrupted by Hallie, "We'll be there."
"Good. Sid, we've got our eye on you. You hang in there and if there's anything we can do-"
"The Delta Lambda Zetas have your back. Bye!"
The girls left after that, leaving the rest of us speechless. Mickey approached, unsatisfied from his investigation of the press conference, and leaned onto some concrete, watching the group of sorority girls leave.
