Once upon a time.. In a world of the past, forgotten today. A world where creatures big and small, magical and normal, lived side by side. A village and forest is where we stay.
The village was that of fairies and there's only one we'll be talking about today. Lina. The fierce and loyal protector. One to be feared indeed by all but one.. Clad in silver armor and eyes of a raging sea, hair white as snow and physique small and weak, her wings were like that of a butterfly and white with purity. She was a silent beauty as well as a strong warrior despite her appearance.
As for the forest, well that was a dark place no fairy would go to in the shadow of night. Demons roamed and raised the land with darkness, but there was one that could be seen as the worst.. Carlos. A guardian as well with no loyalty to his own kind and blank of emotion besides mischief. No one really paid any mind to him since he was always in the shadows until he saw his time. When he did show himself however, it was easy for his prey to drown in the dark desires hidden in his dark eyes of violet.. So easy for them to perish with a scream only to be forgotten later on. He was a lanky boy with shaggy black hair and rough tan skin ripped with scars. His smile was cruel and could both terrify and charm any person to see it.
Both of these guardians were feared and both had a history with the other... just no one knew about it until it came to light once more...
...
"Lina! Where are you going!?" A blue haired man yelled out after her, trying his best to push his wings to their limit.
Yet she only kept flying off and away from him, the distance only growing more and more in between despite his efforts. She was just too fast.
She wasn't trying to be rude but something at the end of their village called to her.. It caused her heart to thump a different beat and her wings to carry her faster than ever before. She remembered her sister telling her she had a bad feeling for today, but she had the opposite and told her just that. She felt that today would hold something special. What, she didn't know, but something special for sure.
She flew with the breeze, her eyes sharp and peering down below. Some children stared up at her in awe and wonder. She sighed, not being able to help herself from smiling and waving at them only for them to cheer in happiness.
She was after all.. Their protector.
She continued on her way until she made it to their borders, landing silently. Her wings folded themselves at her back as she began walking along the treeline where the dark forest began. She paid no mind to the red eyes staring at her from the shadows. Demons never actually approached her unless they needed to, which was never unless they were in battle which didn't happen often nowadays. So she let them watch until one appeared before her eyes.
She didn't flinch at the sight of him already knowing who he was just by seeing his eyes and the scar she herself had left going from his left cheek to his neck.
His eyes widened in seeing her before a lazy smirk appeared on his face.
"Well if it isn't my favorite fairy." He spoke, looking her over.
She felt herself falter at that. Why was he here? Of all demons it had to be him to appear before her.
Her heart thumped louder in her ears as the feeling that brought her here in the first place caused her to look down and see a short path of rubies. Carlos having followed her gaze saw it as well. He'd been brought there out of instinct for some reason he didn't know. It was odd. As if someone had guided him there themselves.
They both started to follow the path, not bothering to acknowledge each other any farther when they didn't need to.
You could say the two were more than uncomfortable to see each other again... of course Carlos seemed completely nonchalant about the entire situation but she could see it either way.
She'd known him too long for a simple facade to work on her.
Back to the ruby path now before them followed into a sort of cave. One that screamed 'DANGER' to Lina as Carlos simply waltzed right into the strange calling of darkness. The shadows were his home either way. What could go wrong.
She sighed to herself before following from behind.
"I have a feeling this is a bad idea.." She started, looking over her surroundings carefully.
He only rolled his eyes, a playful grin appearing on his face.
"Learn to take a little risk, now will ya~" He stated, completely carefree only for a bright light to appear out of nowhere and swallow them up.
Lina immediately went for the hilt of her sword only to grasp at air. She looked down and saw that her attire had changed completely. Instead of being clad in armor she was now clad in cloth. Her eyes widened when she recognized the outfit she wore. The one she was wearing when she was proposed to. She looked to her left hand and saw the same silver ring she had kept under her pillow after he left.
Carlos himself also had a change in attire.. Instead of black he wore green and gold material. To say he was confused would be an understatement. He hadn't worn anything apart from black since he'd left the village of fairies.
The both of them started to look around in confusion before Lina caught something.
"What are you staring at?" He asked,
She continued to stare for a moment before shaking herself out of it.
"Your eyes... they're purple instead of dark violet.." She carefully whispered as his eyes widened.
He looked away quickly only to be met by the same oak wood kitchen from so long ago.
"We've gone back in time it seems.. Love~"
It was her turn to be surprised as she finally recognized where they were.
"Our old cabin.. Before it was destroyed at least." She frowned, while he gave a nod to confirm.
"Yes, indeed we have."
...
Carlos glared outside from the window. He never wanted to come back here. The place so full of life and laughter. The place that always put his lover in danger all so they could be safe. The place that used him as both a weapon and bait while being so carefree about it.
He hated this place.
Lina sat at the kitchen table fiddling with the silver ring on her finger as she thought it all over. It always helped in keeping her mind clear and focused while she thought.
"Why do you think the fates brought us here? The two of us specifically at that.. Our history's already ended there's no need for more to be added" she thought aloud, while he turned to meet her stare.
"After almost killing each other last time they probably want us to finish the job. That or they just want to torture us with the past.." He grumbled, "It's working."
She nodded, looking back down as she remembered the past herself.
"We used to be so happy here... The times were so much simpler all before that day."
He hummed in agreement, but it also sounded bored and frustrated.
"If you think I'm going to talk about why I left, you already know why.."
She nodded
"I do. I was actually going to ask why you didn't ask me to come with you.." She sighed sadly, her voice as soft as usually.
"Because I knew you wouldn't want to leave." Was his simple response,
"I would have followed.."
He shook his head, disagreeing with the statement.
"Your loyalties were always to your people. I didn't expect you to follow after my dream. I wanted to be free of this village and ended up with my own kind instead only to feel like I didn't belong." He explained,
That was all there was to it. No darkness came into the picture until the war from 13 years ago happened. The two of them were on different sides and had no choice to fight each other. The outcome wasn't pretty. He thought he'd killed her and turned to the shadows for comfort in his pain.
Lina suddenly giggled
"I would have if you asked. I might have been their loyal protector but I was getting tired of death. You had my heart, Carlos. I would have followed you anywhere if it meant being by your side. Even if it meant turning to the darkness.." She didn't know why, but she felt amused by his earlier statement. The real question would've been why wouldn't she follow? "There's no light without darkness. Light somehow always casts a shadow of some sort whether we like it or n-"
BANG!
Both jumped in surprise.
"Well it seems we've arrived on the exact day our home was destroyed, love."
She nodded, standing up and running for the closet where she was sure she kept her sword.
"It's been awhile since we've fought together.. I remember that was how this entire thing started..."
...
They both met while the other was in trouble for the same reason. Both became partners. Both became protectors... all the way up to being lovers.
Carlos couldn't take it anymore and left while Lina stayed behind having been told to do so by him. He wouldn't drag her into the darkness where he belonged. No. He could never do something like that to a woman who brought the only light in his life.
He decided so after their cabin was destroyed for the first time. A high ranking demon had crashed in on them as they were eating lunch and made an attempt on her life to which Carlos was forced to take on his true form -that he couldn't control- to save her and almost kill her in the process.
He was afraid after that.
Lina knew his reasons for leaving quite well. She knew his fear. He was always so protective of her and it drove her crazy sometimes, but she wasn't afraid of the darkness he held. She didn't care if it drew her in. She just wanted to by his side to be by his side. Nothing more than that.
So after the high ranked demon had crashed into the kitchen again in this past memory she was ready for it. So was he, and they fought. They fought together and in perfect sync. Though she was powerful the demon overpowered her like it did all those years ago when it released its hellish flames over them. She remembered quite well how this demon took her by surprise the first time. She'd always been the one to win and it was her first time losing.. Yet she wasn't mad about it.. She took it to heart instead and decided to up her game as well.
So though it overpowered her once again she was ready for the fall back and kicked herself back to her feet, by doing so however, caused her wings to unfold by instinct since she was in the air for more than a couple seconds being that the demon decided to blow her back. This caused her wings to get caught in the falling debris which brought her down with a slight cry of pain that did its job well in catching Carlos' full attention.
"Lina!" He called over, panic stricken all of a sudden.
Not again..
He wouldn't let her almost get killed again. So he was quick to go to his knees and sink into the darkness near him. He shuffled around, looking above him to see all the damage before running to be just underneath Lina. He jumped out, grabbing her bridal style on the way up to fly up to the upper beam still holding strong.
He set her against the support beam before looking down to her ripped wing.
"Does it hurt?" He asked, being careful as he grabbed and unfolded it.
She gritted her teeth in response to the action before answering.
"Yes.. Yes it does hurt. I'll be fine though, this isn't the first time I've ripped one of my wings during a fight. They heal quickly."
He sighed in slight relief before nodding and turning back to the awaiting monster still trying to find them.
The demon was huge.. But rather dumb.
Which was just fine with him.
Carlos decided to go against it head on once more only to get shot back into the wall by force
He couldn't do this. Not as he was now. He knew he'd have to transform but that was not something he wanted... especially with Lina just above him.
"It's ok.. I'll stay out of your way... just do what you think is best!" Lina called down, feeling his aura darken before going back to normal, then again.
He was fighting with himself.
With light comes darkness. With darkness comes light. Night and day. Good and bad. All were two sides of the same coin as they say.
So despite the little confidence he had he decided to let the other side of his coin flip. And suddenly... everything was dark. Before red eyes suddenly appeared in the shadow. No body could be seen. Only red eyes until sharp teeth appeared next. As if the shadows themselves were the monster underneath.
A feral growl sounded that caused Lina to flinch slightly. Her ripped wing started to turn black as it healed in touching the nearby shadows.
"You'll pay~" A raspy voice growled,
.
.
.
.
.
And to this day no one truly knows what happened next or where the two of them disappeared to.
If the demon was defeated or not.
If the two ran or died.
But I guess that could be up to whoever hears the story.
Change the ending and decide their fate.
Do you like happy endings..?
Or sad ones.
It's your choice on how this story ends.
