Chapter 6: Questionable Composition
I watch the angry cloud of steam rise and disappear a few inches above the teapot. Grandma was making tea. She carefully creaked open the oven and pulled out a tray of chocolate chip cookies. It smells a lot better than when the Barbie witch tries to make bean lasagna and the bathroom after the Barbie witch makes people eat the bean lasagna. Once when the Barbie witch's equally scary-looking friend was over, I think I heard the toilet actually sobbing.
Megan sits at the table with a smile on her face, feeling at home. I always love when Megan's happy. She has that enthusiastic aura around her, just like her mother. Setting down a plate of warm cookies and glancing over at the tea, Grandma sits across her.
Megan's smile fades. "I can't believe Dad left me for her."
Grandma takes her hand. "He didn't leave you, Megan. He's just away for a wedding. That's all."
"Yeah but he could've stayed. Or at least he could've taken me with him," Megan responds.
Grandma chuckles. "It sounds like you need an excuse to go away from me."
Megan smiles. "No, mom. Didn't mean it like that. I'd rather be here than there."
Grandma nods. "So how's the story coming along."
Megan picks me up and flips to the absolute back. "Good, but I'm going to run out of paper soon. I was going to ask Dad or Lucy to take me and buy me one but they were busy. I'm going to need another one. Too bad I can't get one until they come back."
"What do you mean you can't?" Grandma exclaimed, as if it were the most ridiculous thing she's ever heard. "We can go to the store today."
I had been dreading the moment when Megan admits she needs another notebook. She'll how me away soon enough. I don't mind the throwing away part, but I'd miss Megan and Trudy and even Ralph. But, I don't think Megan would throw me away right away. She'd need for a while. Especially for the contest. I just hope whatever notebook Megan gets isn't too snobby. Or worse, so nice that they get all of Megan's attention. That would really dull my edges.
Megan's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Grandma stood to get the teapot from the stove. She nods. "Of course. We'll go right after we finish the tea and cookies."

"A new notebook? Already? You've still got pages left in you," Trudy exclaimed after Megan left. We were on the desk in her temporary room at Grandma's house.
"Hey, there's no harm in getting a new notebook," Ralph says, "Maybe we'll finally get a notebook that won't try to give you a paper cut while you're sleeping."
"It's not my fault you snore like you're king of the freaking jungle."
"You annoying little-"
"Oh, hush, Ralph," she says, "Well, whoever it is, as long as they are tolerable, we'll welcome them with open arm."
My spine curls, filling me with dread. "And what if they're not and Megan still decides to keep them?"
"Then we've got your back," Trudy replies, "Right, Ralph?"
"I make no promises," he grumbles.
"You're going to be just fine," Trudy comforts me, ignoring Ralph.
