It wasn't meant to end up like this...
Our Sun, Nibus 5, exploded 4 years ago. Our planet, Selene, named after the goddess of the moon, somehow survived. Only to receive, however, the worst possible punishment or Karma known to man: The Freeze. It started in the lower regions, and began to inch it's way up the landmass we had settled on.
The warmest region, Northen Mal, became overcrowded with people trying to escape the inevitable. The Freeze consumed villages, towns, cities turning whatever people it could grasp into horrible, morphic and mutated creatures.
We call these people 'Pickers', and it's known widely that if your ever grazed by The Freeze, or a Picker's hand, your done for. You either turn and get killed out of fear, or be able to put yourself down your own way, out of fear. I guess that's all it is anymore, really. Living your life filled with fear of what might become of you...and yet dieing with fear, either way.
Oh, who might I be? My name is Marci. Mari Wellis. My father was a general for our small militia, and my mother stayed at home with the help of my caretaker, Nathaniel Trest. See, I'm blind, and I couldn't do as much as the other village girls could. Nathaniel helped me learn to sow, helped my mother teach me how to cook, and helped me with my way around places.
But then the pipes burst.
I was only 16, When the Freeze found us. The village waterlines frosted over, the bolts were sent flying, scattered over the well platform. People ran, screaming, trying to get the children away from the contamination, without realizing that they were already.
Blood. Bodies. Unholy screeching filling the air. My parents were taken, But not before they could give Nathaniel his last task.
To protect me until one of us breathes our last breath.
And he did. He snatched me up from the hastily put together safe house and ran. We ran for days. And now, as he tells me, we're 8'078 kilometers away, north. And that's where this story begins, in the abandoned city Of Pali.
Oh, how I wish I could see it.
