April 2013 : Seoul Heights Divison | Senior Year

Moonbyul was someone deemed unreachable. Her world filled with red, black and blues, detached from any outsiders. And maybe that's why nobody could ever understand Seokjin's curiosity and obsession with her. Not even the man's best friend, Jimin.

But the more she seemed to be acquainted with Seokjin, the happier she seemed. The others took note of Moonbyul's drastic change. For once she was someone who smiled more, one who laughed and giggled at Seokjin's corny jokes. Every action he performed made her heart flutter and she felt like she found her safe haven within him.

So then where did it all go wrong?

It was on a midday afternoon- April 11, 2013, when the pair were 4 years into their relationship, Byulyi receives an anonymous call from her cell phone that senior year.

"Byulyi your father is in the hospital."

That night, Byulyi's father lay curled up in bed, and the door to his room creaked open. Light from the hallway flooded the room, a hulking shadow soon blocking it out.

Her father squeezed his eyes shut and clutched at blanket. Regret and guilt clouding his thoughts when he saw who entered.

Mr. Moon's breathing grew labored laying limp on the hospital bed as the final words escape his mouth.

"I'm sorry Byul-ah."

It wasn't enough. Sorry would never be enough for what he'd done to their family.

"I didn't think I would lose. I'm so-."

1:05am. Dead.

Byulyi's father was a gambler. An ambitious one. So it came off as irony when the man was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Karma did always have its way with people.

Sadly all the man had ever brought to his family was debts and misfortune and unfortunately for Byulyi, she was the one put to work at a young age to help pay her father's debts off.

Her mother had left the girl when she just was at a tender age of 9 to go marry off a much better man and Moonbyul doesn't blame her all that much. Maybe during the lonely sleepless nights she cried herself to sleep did she question why her mother left her but otherwise the female learned to fend for her own needs.

She stood surprised when her father decided to make Byulyi move from their small town in South Korea to a bigger city. The city of Seoul. Turns out it was only because the bastard old man wanted a better area to continue his gambling sessions and that was the perfect spot.

Through the female juggling her high school courses, her part jobs to pay her father's debts and managing to take care of her younger sibling Seulgi, she met Seokjin.

It was on a spring day when she snuck out to go to the Azalea flower festival. Her father was too driven up by alcohol to take notice of Byulyi's absence until much later.

That was the first time she bumped into Seokjin. The next time she encountered Seokjin was in the school faculty office when she had just transferred to their school, Seoul Heights.

And after that time it seemed like fate was playing a sick game on her. Because no matter where Byulyi seemed to go their paths were entwined. She kept stumbling upon Seokjin.

Somewhere deeply surpressed inside of her, she was aware that the boy took an interest in her.

Byulyi knew being afflicted with Seokjin would only bring both the parties pain. She knew Seokjin would be better off without her. But still, she decides to listen to the sound resonating in her heart for once and agrees to go out with him.

Moonbyul and Jin's relationship, at first, was going well.

Never once did Seokjin ever question why she took multiple part time jobs, why Byulyi returned home earlier than other students, why he never got to meet her parents. And that was all because Seokjin trusted Byulyi.

But Byulyi had become overwhelmed by all the problems surrounding her.

She's just turned 18 when her father died and the stress she encountered afterwards drove her past sanity.

Moonbyul still had numerious bills to pay off, checks, school courses, her sibling, trying to find a good career. It was all simply too much.

Byulyi thus retorted back to her old ways- the quiet, cold and distant female. Jin had taken notice of it. She no longer accepts his calls, his messages, his emails, wouldn't even show up to their dates.

Most people lean on their partners for support but Byulyi started feeling like a burden to Seokjin.

And it was then in the midst of the season, two weeks after her father's death- April 21st 2013.

The sky was grey and gloomy, clouds covering the area as rain pelted onto the floor grounds to create water droplets. The air feels stagnant, stifling.

"I can't do this anymore,"  Byulyi bites out. It's not easy.

Jin's unable to look away from where her collarbones had become deep bowls, only noticing now in shock how sunken Byulyi's eyes looked, cheeks hollowed and stretched back and how sharp her cheekbones had become.

Her lips are slightly parted as she speaks. She looks like she hasn't slept or eaten for days. Truth be told they both haven't met up for days.

Seokjin gazes up with widened eyes "I'm sorry... What?"

"Let's break up Seokjin." Her voice felt hoarse and heavy as tears streamed down her face.

The ground felt rougher than normal, like it was digging into his knees despite it not actually touching his skin. His eyes were getting red and his cheeks puffed up.

"Byulyi-" she could hear the hurt in his voice "I know your dad just died but we can work through this. I can help you."

"No Jin I don't need any more of your help." She retaliates angrily chewing on her lip. The lie is sour on her tongue.

Seokjin was her support system. Byulyi knew that well, but all she ever felt all these years was a burden to the boy.

Jin is confident, determined, intelligent, opinionated, witty, talented, supportive, understanding. And she felt his life was much better off without her problems meddling in his way.

"I'm sorry Seokjin, goodbye."

There's a river behind his ribs and a dam about to crack. Maybe it already has. His voice was shaking as he grabbed his stuff, stomping off with his eyes watering as Byulyi watches the man from behind. He couldn't quite name the emotions he was feeling so he closed the door behind.

She hated herself more than anyone, even her father that day. But Moonbyul was going to this on her own. Make a name by herself, for herself. Become an independent woman she can gleam proudly at in front of the mirror. She can't burden Seokjin anymore.

And it was on that day that another phone call rang into Byulyi's house, from a man named Min Yoongi.

"You have been accepted for the job offer. See you next week miss future wedding planner."

Byulyi thought she made the right choice. That she was going to safe him from the hassles of her world. Unbeknownst to her, however, Seokjin had broken without her presence.
