Wrong Choice

“Truth or dare?” Charlie asked.
Charlie, Sophia and Emma were best friends. They were trouble makers, they caused troubles wherever  they were and with whoever they were with. Except themselves , sometimes.
Currently they were at Sophia’s house playing some games.

“Truth” Sophia said.
“Do you believe in ghost or paranormal stuff?” Charlie asked.
“No, the thing I can’t see, hear or feel, I consider it as non-existent.” Sophia answered factly.
“Your turn Emma, Truth or Dare?” Charlie asked Emma.
“Dare” Emma said.

Charlie began to look around the room for something to dare her with. Sophia takes the chance to give her own dare.

“Call some number and prank them” Sophia dared Emma.
“Which number should I call?” Emma asked to Sophia.
“Any random number, your choice” Sophia said shrugging.
“Let’s make her dare a bit interesting, I watched a video on some paranormal or you can say haunted phone numbers across globe, so if you wish we can…” Charlie said mischievously wiggling his eyes.

“Ok” Sophia said agreeing to this. While Emma denying the whole ‘call the haunted phone’ thing.

“No, I won’t call the haunted number, didn’t you watch the whole video, and they also say that it has dangers related to it, it may cause dangers to my life, I’m too young to die” Emma explained her point, while the others two wanted to try something new and adventurous, which is common for teenagers these days.

“Dare is a dare you have to do it, you don’t have a second choice, you behave like a coward, how do you even believe someone who haven’t even tried it themselves, nothing bad will happen” Sophia says forcing Emma to play.

“I am out of this game then, you two can play yourself.” Emma says getting up from her seat.
“No, you won’t, we will take the full responsibility of this, please just this time, don’t deny us.” Charlie says showing his puppy eyes, Sophia watches Charlie and joins him in giving her own puppy eyes.
“Ok, just this time” Emma agrees.

After the few minutes of gathering enough information about “Haunted Phone Numbers”, they finally decided to call a number.

They decided to call the most haunted number they could find:
369 396 3639

They were ready to call they number Emma began to dial the number, when suddenly Sophia’s cat, Lucy jumped on Emma causing the phone to fall down on the ground.

“Lucy what are you doing here go to you place and don’t interrupt us I’ll feed you afterward” Sophia says to the cat to which the cats purrs and went back to her place.

“Ok you are free to call now” Charlie says, Emma noded and picked up the phone from the rug and dialed the number.

“Hello?” Emma asks on the call. They had the call on speaker so that all of them could hear it.
“Hello?” she asks again, but there was no reply till then.

“8, 10, 2020, WRONG CHOICE, E’s HOUSE, 6, 9, 13, 5, 17’oclock, BEEP! BEEP!” a half robotic half humane voice replied hanging the phone soon after, leaving all them clueless.

“What was that?, I didn’t understand anything except 17’oclock which is 5 in the evening, did you understand anything Emma?” Sophia asked Emma.

“2020 is the year so 8 and 10 must be the date and month, which is today, so what is it today at 5 pm?” Emma asked.

“It also said something like wrong choice, E’s House….and some numbers ….6…..9…..13…..and 5 or so what does all that mean” Charlie asked Sophia.

“E’s house? Can it be Emma’s house?” Sophia said, Emma’s eyes widened in realization, and panick rises inside her.
“My house!!!! I told you already it was a bad choice, what will happen to my house today?” Emma asked them both with tears filing her eyes, Sophia and Charlie began to regret their decision, but it was too late to make it right now.

“What is 6,9,13,5?” Sophia asked them.
“Is it related to you address, landline or something like that?” Charlie ask Emma turning his head towards her.
“No…Its not related to my house” Emma replied to Charlie trying to think about anything the numbers could relate to.

“I have a guess… could it be related to alphabets like we see in movies?” Charlie suggested.
“We are trying to be serious here, please suggest something more practical” Sophia said watching Emma’s tears falling down her cheeks, feeling bad that she had caused her best friend’s tears.

“Actually, it could be, let’s try it, anyways we don’t have any other clue what the numbers could meant” Emma says wiping her tears stained cheeks.

“6 is F, 9 is I, 13 is R and 5 is….E, so it says F-I-R-E, it means fire! Oh my god” Charlie says.

“So the whole thing meant that today we did the wrong choice of calling the haunted number which will result in Emma’s house catching fire at 5 pm, only half hour for 5”oclock now” Sophia says connecting all the dots. All are now seriously scared of this whole thing.

“Emma call your parents and tell them to move out of the house urgently make sure no one is present in the house” Sophia says as they all head towards Emma’s house.

They reach at her house and see all of Emma’s family members standing in their lawn with confused faces. They walk towards her gate when suddenly they see smoke coming out of the window of the upper room which belongs to Emma.

Urgently fire brigade was called and soon after the fire was controlled, the reason of fire was told to be a circuit failure which resulted in her room catching fire.

Thankfully no one was harmed. They understood that they shouldn’t be doing anything which is prohibited. And they never did anything like that again.

Soooo my readers
This as you can see was an horror short short which was too short I know....

This wasn't in my plan...it just happened.

There was an short story writting compition in my college last year this was what I submitted and I saw that this was saved so I decided to post it and see if you like it.
