Late November 1999
When Josuke heard that Ellie had been taken to the hospital, he went into panic mode.
"Is she okay? What happened? Is there anything I can do?" He had rushed out when Mrs. Rivers called.
"She's going to be okay; she has a bad lung infection. We thought it was just a bad chest cold, but she spiked a high fever and found it hard to breathe. Diabetics are susceptible to illness and infection and it can be a big issue; but the doctors have her on antibiotics, so she should be out in a couple of days." Mrs. Rivers explained. "She wanted me to let you know."
"Thank you, can I come see her? I can be with her if you guys need a break." He offered, still on high alert and fidgeting with the telephone cord.
"Are you sure, Josuke?" She asked.
"Absolutely! Anything you need..."
"You're too sweet." She cooed, the exhaustion in her voice now clear.
After saying their goodbyes and promising that he'd be there as fast as he could, Josuke bustled around his house, gathering various things that both he and Ellie enjoyed—manga, CDs, magazines, and other such entertainment to make her feel better—and stuffed it all in a bag. While he scrambled, he thought over the past few days—she didn't look good on Thursday, wasn't at school on Friday, and, now on Sunday, was hospitalized. He hadn't heard from her either, the typical phone calls that would happen whenever one was out didn't come. Of course, he'd been busy over the weekend and hadn't given it any thought, but these things that were adding up should've been noticed.
'Don't beat yourself up over it.' Crazy Diamond said as he bolted out the door towards the train station.
'But I should've paid better attention.' He argued, frustrated with his distraction.
Josuke was an anxious mess the entire ride to the hospital. Since he and Ellie hit it off almost instantly, it didn't take long for them to rise in relationship status from acquainted Stand users to significant others. Yeah, it was fast-paced, but what do you do when everything fells so right and natural? Hide things and ignore the elephant in the room? They hadn't exactly made their relationship public knowledge except to Okuyasu and Koichi due to the possible backlash from their classmates—Josuke was the heartthrob of school and Ellie was ridiculed for things she has no control over. It was a vicious and unfair climate, but none of that mattered so long that they had each other.
"Ellie Rivers?" Josuke politely asked the receptionist but couldn't help drumming his fingers on the desk impatiently as she searched up the name.
"Room 511, sir." She answered with a practiced smile.
Budogaoka Hospital was a large facility, and Josuke knew it well enough due to interrogating Stand users whom he hospitalized or when he was a patient himself. He power-walked through the long halls and past the nurse's stations until he arrived at the room. He poked his head in the room, glancing around as he slowly opened the door until Mrs. Rivers noticed and met at the door.
"Thank you for coming," She sighed, her eyes and smile tired, but a thankful expression still held its place. "She's dozing for now, but she'd steadily improving. I kept you coming a secret to surprise her, I think it'll lift her spirits."
"I brought some things for us to do," He said in a quiet voice and showed Ellie's mom the bag that he'd stuffed, an almost tearfully happy smile grew across her face. "Music, magazines, simple things..."
"Oh, Josuke, you didn't have to.'
"I want her to feel better and I know these things will at least keep her mind off of it all." He looked down at its contents then sighed. "Is there anything I need to know before you leave?"
