The alarm sounded as if stabbing Naseem's ears. She couldn't believe it was the big day. She got dressed like "rocker chic" as Tania called her new outfit. A black shirt with a long purple cardigan and her blue skinny jeans and a purple scarf to top it off. She hoped that her being Muslim didn't throw any of the other guitarists off because hijabis could do anything.
She still had to get through Computer Science and Sociology till 5. She was so nervous that she was shaking.
She turned off the radio and got out of the car. She couldn't pay attention as her professors droned on about codes and social structure. Then suddenly, she looked at her phone and it was 4. Class was over. The girls were waiting for her at the food court and she ate Panda Express so quick her chest was hurting.
"Slow down Naseem. You're gonna choke." Salwa said worriedly.
"I don't want to be late. Traffic is crazy."
"Girl, the Fox Theatre is literally five minutes away and there's no traffic. We ain't on the freeway." Tania said.
"Well, I have to go. I'll let you know after. Bye." Naseem fast walked out to her car.
"Crazy woman." Nusrat said.

The sun blinded Naseem's vision as she got out of the car. There was a huge line at the theatre stretching all the way to the other side of the street. She reluctantly walked to the back of it. There were so many girls auditioning, some didn't even look like they knew how to play. They looked like they were just going to see One Direction. Fan girls will stop at nothing, Naseem thought.
She was being so hypocritical but at least she knew how to play the guitar. She knew every single song they ever created. There was no way she wasn't gonna get the job.
She was lost in thought and suddenly noticed the huge gap in front of her.
"Move lady! We ain't got all day!" A stranger shouted behind her and she quickly walked ahead.
All of a sudden, the line started to move faster and faster till she got in the theatre. There was a security guard who seemed to be checking if everyone had a guitar and was there for the part, and not just to get selfies with the boys or autographs. She showed them the guitar and another guy led her to the stage.
It was pitch dark except there was one light pointed at the mic.
"The boys want to hear you play in the dark so nobody judges you the wrong way. They just want to hear the music and not get sidetracked by beauty or weirdness." Said the guy reluctantly.
She went up to the stage and put her guitar around her and started to play Story of My Life. She lost herself in the strings and sound of the song. She played the whole song thinking they might cut her off and say next. But she kept playing till she finished. The lights came back on and there in the front row sat Harry and Niall. She almost fainted but kept her cool, at least on the outside.
They clapped for her and Niall opened his mouth to speak.
"That was awesome. Great song choice and there were no mistakes at all honestly. It looked so effortless. Can you please go to the back room while we make a final decision." As Niall was saying this, Harry kept staring at Naseem and she liked it but it was making her uncomfortable.
"Ok thank you," Naseem said both in a nervous and excited tone. The security gaurd led her into a bright room filled with other stage equipment. There were five metal chairs against the wall. It smelled of wood and coffee. There were four other girls in there and she took a seat next to a blond girl with a pink guitar.
She sat and waited for what felt like an hour. She texted her girls to let them know what had happened and as usual, they encouraged her and she felt great but for some reason she felt a bit of doubt. She knew she had no reason to doubt herself but seeing all these other girls, she had that voice in her head asking her if she was good enough to be better than the others. She shook her head. Her confidence needed to be there if she wanted to get through the day. She sighed.
The security guard came in with a very lethargic expression. "Girls, please come to the stage now," he said carelessly. The other girls got up quick and she trailed behind them while shaking and sweating so much that she felt like she would pass out.
They all stood on stage while Niall st and Harry stood up about to speak.
He opened his mouth, "Hello girls. As you all know, we will only picking one person for this job. I know you'll be disappointed but I'm sure that some other band will pick you. It was a hard decision but we needed to choose the guitarist that is the best fit for our group." He looked at Naseem with a stern expression. She felt intimidated but was flattered all the same.
Still looking at her he said, "That perfect fit is Naseem Zahid. Congratulations, the boys and I are looking forward to working with you."
Naseem thought she was dreaming and jumped with joy. Harry walked towards her. She was shaking, what was he about to do? He came close and gave her a hug and she embraced it of course. He whispered congratulations in her ear and she melted, on the inside of course. She felt like she was on cloud 9. Her heart jumped with adrenaline.
She was so happy that she didn't even notice the girls that didn't make it. They were crying and Niall was over there comforting them and whatnot. They left with a sad expression. She almost felt bad but she was the one and she just accepted it.
Harry told her all about the job and how she was going to be touring the world with the boys and that she'd be paid 40 bucks an hour and that most shows lasted 8-9 hours. She loved it and she knew she could live off the pay.
Harry let go and told her to meet the boys at the airport on Sunday morning with an address and an airplane ticket to London. She couldn't believe this was all happening. A year ago, when she bought her guitar, she would've never thought it would lead her here. She kissed it as she walked out of the theatre.
As she drove, she thought about what she had to tell her mom. She didn't want to leave but this was an opportunity that really only came once. She had her sister, Rehab, to watch over her mom. She needed to convince her mom well.
Life was great.
