"You have been busy Sean, digging into things that don't concern you," Adrian stated as he walked around the room.
Chloe Sanders's heart stopped as she the voice. Her mind reeled with confusing thoughts, but the loud sound of a fist hitting flesh and a grunt of pain brought her back. She tried not to move as she peered out the crack of her door. Her father was being held down by a much larger man, tattoos on his neck and arms. He was one reason she had decided to hide the visible guns the others held or carried being the second.
"Tell me what I want to know!" Adrian yelled, frustrated. Years of planning, thousands of dollars spent, almost unraveled because of his brother. "Where are the files?!"
"What files? " Sean Sanders said in a low hissed voice full of pain, anger, and betrayal, ignoring the question. He had been secretly investigating whoever was the one in charge of the corruption and leaks within the Police Department. He never once thought it was his older brother until the evidence started to pile up.
A step creaked on the stairs, and it had Chloe moving back into the shadows, as a man in a police uniform passed by her door and went to her Father's room. "Sir, we found it hidden in the study." In his hand, he carried her Father's laptop. "She bit the inside of her lip from making a sound. The men in the room looked anything like cops, but the man with the laptop was Sergent Baker.
She saw her Father struggle against his captor. "Why?" He shouted angrily through a bloody mouth, his Irish lilt more pronounced.
Adrian just smiled. "You mean you haven't figured that out?" He moved closer, "Pity, you were always the good one, the supposedly smart one." He kept smiling as he raised his gun. "Well, brains and luck may have gotten you Michelle, but they won't save you in the end" and fired three shots.
Chloe's mind froze, a chocked gurgle escaping her already covered mouth as she saw her Father jerking from the bullets, his body falling to the floor. She didn't even register the blood from her lip or know she was biting it behind her hand in an attempt to stay quiet.
"Make it look like a break-in." He tossed the gun to Baker. He looked down at his brother, laying in a ground pool of blood, gasping and then shook his head. "It should have all been mine, you know, I am the eldest... and now it will be."
Adrian looked at the door of his niece's bedroom, thinking he heard a noise. She was supposed to be at a graduation party tonight or something; still..., he made his way to the room. Was the door open when he came in?
She hurried and hid in the closet, tossing dirty clothes over herself. Holding her breath and squeezing her eyes closed, she held tight to her legs as she hunched over. Expecting her Uncle to find her but praying he didn't.
Adrian opened the door and stared into the room, the light from the hallway shining into a very messy 18-year-old's room, posters of guys in what he assumed where music bands and actors on the walls; a couple of them were shirtless with Korean writing under them. Books surrounded the bed along with clothes and shoes were in piles by the closet, makeup and jewelry covered the desk and table. He shook his head; his niece was never very organized.
"Sir? We should go, the neighbors may have heard. " Baker said behind him.
"Right... let's go. The others know what to do." Nudging a small bag by the door, he stared at it before heading down the stairs.
Leaving the house, he opened his umbrella as the rain came down and headed quickly for the car. Behind him, he could hear the sounds of crashing and breaking.
The other men finished quickly, turning things over and planting false evidence before leaving the house. She waited just long enough to the car doors close before she was running into her parent's room.
