As orange-pink started to spread across the lightening sky, the rabbits of Watership Down mourned their leader. Clover sobbed quietly at the loss of her mate, while Hyzenthlay comforted her, a expression of understanding and sorrow on her face. She knew what it was like to lose the one you loved. She had watched Holly be struck down in battle. Bigwig and Strawberry sat close together, their kits sitting at their paws, all wore a grieving expression. Fiver closed his eyes and bent his head down, face mourning but at peace. He knew this would happen. He had received a vision of his brother's death before Hazel died. The rabbits said quietly and in unison, "My heart has split the thousand, for my brother has stopped running today." Sunlight spilled across the land as morning approached, and the rabbits spent most of the day mourning Hazel before they buried his body.
At dusk, the rabbits decided Bigwig would become their new chief rabbit. As night fell, the rabbits too fell asleep. They would be safe and happy, even with Hazel gone, as The Black Rabbit Of Inde had assured him in his death.
