Anything that wouldn't be possible in our world, counts as fictional. Well, that's my point of view. So I made up some definitions.
1. Realistic Fiction: It might be possible in our world under certain circumstances. The content sounds plausible - the characters are involved in events that could happen (recent past/present/near future). Also the characters deal with problems we can associate with.
2. Science Fiction: Fiction focused on science or technology such as aliens, space, time travel, robots,... Mostly in the future
3. Alternate Universe (AU): Not possible in our world, so the alternate universe does the job. Different timelines, crossovers, what-if-situations...
4. Fictional Fiction: Just like AU, but I'd say it has more fantasy elements.
Why I am pointing this out? Because some people don't get it. You can't say a story with vampires is realistic fiction, even though everything else seems realistic. Sorry guys, vampires aren't real.
Also they might exaggerate with their fiction and be like "Let's make a multicrossover with Harry Potter, Walking Dead, Assassin's Creed and put One Direction in there. Even though their universes would never ever come across, so let's put them in a high school. Why? Because I'm the author and I can do whatever I want."
Crossovers are fun, but you should have a well thought explanation, before you do ^this^.
An example would be Drake&Josh x iCarly. So Crazy Steve kidnaps Megan, renames her Carly. Names himself Spencer and pretends to be her brother and lives with her in Seattle. This fan theory actually exists.
