FRIDAY. MY FAVORITE DAY OF the week, besides Wednesday, of course. One might ask, why is FRIDAY your favorite day, Kalle? Well, Friday is the last day of the weekday so school will be out for the next two days. On Fridays, River's Donut Delights Bakery would be open for longer than 2 PM.
Friday is scheme day.
"I will never be able to get over how big your house is," Normani remarks, walking through the archway to enter my large, polished living room. "Well, I'll never be able to get over the fact that I got to enter this place before Kayson ― why is that anyway even though I've asked a million times?"
I take the remote in my hand before taking a seat down the ottoman and powering on the TV to watch The Falcon and Winter Soldier. "He'll see this place soon enough even though I've said this a million times."
As the words come out of my mouth, my phone's ringtone, Swim by Chase Atlantic abruptly goes off.
Butthead </3 would like to FaceTime...
The sounds of cardboard and Kayson's girlish yelp fill my ears immediately after accepting the call.
Logan points his index finger at his weary brother. "You took my favorite Number 2 pencil, you Buffon!"
Normani giggles as she listens to the two brothers argue back and forth about a pencil but it was a known fact around here to never mess with Logan Blakes and his pencils which happen to be one of his prized possessions.
This one time, when their sister Avalon had accidentally taken one of Logan's pencils to New York he cried about it for weeks until it was returned to him. Apparently, it was his first pencil that he had received from his favorite Literacy teacher and that itself was self-explanatory according to the kid.
"Kalle! Tell this kid that YOU'RE the one that took it because you did! YOU USED IT FOR YOUR JOURNALING PROJECT!" Kayson screams into the phone as Logan starts hitting him with the cardboard again.
I think back to a few days ago when I was at their house. "OH, that. I do have it."
I observe Logan's facial expression transform from worry to calm as I remember and see them both exhale a sigh of relief.
"KB, you look like you just woke up and your hair looks like a rat's nest that was pooped on by a bunch of birds," Normani comments as her eyes wandered from the TV to the phone in my hand.
"The perspective of an artist will never baffle me, Nor, so shush. Plus, I just woke up from my afternoon nap."
"And which nap was that? The 5th?" she asks as her eyebrows rose questioningly.
He sends her a quick grin because she knows him so well.
Kayson had come to pick us up since my parents took my car for a week because we had used it to pull one of the best pranks in our history but that's a story for another time.
