Reader's Pov

Dumbledore had just announced that the school was going to be holding a ball for fourth years and above. Christmas break was coming up soon so they decided to hold on Christmas Eve.

You were definitely excited about it, but when someone mentioned getting dates for the ball, that was when your mood went down.

You didn't think anyone was going to ask you, and it turns out you were right. The days leading up to the ball went painfully slow, and yet no one asked you to be their date.

But, it seemed you weren't the only one who was having trouble. James had asked Lily to the ball, obviously, and, to no one's surprise, she declined.

So, you and James were the only ones without a date out of your friend group, which made you come up with the plan of going with him. As friends, of course.

"James!" You called out as you walked through the portrait hole and into the common room.

James looked up at the sound of his name and his eyes landed on you. "Yeah?" he asked.

"Do you wanna go to the ball together? I mean like as friends." You said.

"Oh. Okay, then." he said, shrugging.

"Great!" You said brightly.

...

A few hours before the ball, you, Lily, Mary, Marlene, and Dorcas decided to get ready. You didn't think it was necessary to need so much time to get ready, but Lily insisted on it.

You all got your dress robes on, and Lily started on your makeup. After she was finished, you got up and put on your heels, then surveyed yourself in the mirror. You actually felt very pretty, and it was nice to dress up for once.

"(Y/N)! You look great!" You heard Mary say. You smiled at yourself in the mirror before turning around and looking at others.

"Thanks, Mary." You said. "But you guys look way better."

"Oh, shut up we all look great." Marlene said, laughing. "Come on, we should get down to the common room."

Your friends had gotten dates from other houses, so when you got to the bottom of the staircase, they said their goodbyes to you so they could meet them, promising to meet up with each other at the ball.

You looked around the mass of students that were crowded around the common room, and your eyes finally fell on James, who was standing with Remus, Sirius, and Peter.

You quickly made your way over, accidently bumping into a few people on the way. Once you landed in front of James, you tripped on your heels and fell, and your hands instantly went to brace themselves, which happened to be on James' shoulders.

"Sorry, I'm not use to walking in heels." You said, standing up straight.

"Oh, it's alright, I -- " James looked at you and he seemed at a loss for words. "Wow. You look just -- wow."

"Thanks." You said shyly. "You look nice too."

"Ready to go?" James asked, holding his arm out.

"Yes, I am." You replied, linking your arm with his.

You and James made your way over to the Great Hall, and when you entered, it looked completely different than usual. The four house tables were gone and there was now a dance floor instead. Small round tables were scattered around the edges of room, each being able to sit around three people.

The enchanted ceiling was showcasing the snow that was falling down outside and the walls and ceiling were garnished with lights and wreaths.

"Wow, it's so pretty." You said as you were mesmerized by the Hall. It was already very crowded and the students, all wearing different colors of dress robes, were either dancing, talking, or getting food and drinks.

The upbeat song that was playing was coming to end and was being replaced by a slow one.

"Would you like to dance?" James asked you, holding out his hand.

"I would love to." You smiled, taking his hand as he directed you to the dance floor. You walked towards the middle and you hung your arms around his neck while his rested on your waist.

"This is nice." You said, looking up at James.

"Yeah, it is." he said, grinning. You leaned into him and rested your head on his chest as you both slowly swayed to the music. The song seemed to be fading away, like it was playing in another room, and you could clearly hear James' steady heartbeat.

You signed contently, feeling so happy and safe in his arms that you never wanted to leave. The song was now coming to an end, and you lifted your head off his chest, looking up at him.

You started at each other for a moment when suddenly, James was leaning towards you, and you were too. Your lips met, and it was so blissful, but before you knew it, James had pulled away from you and was running off the dance floor.

You blinked, standing frozen to your spot.

"(Y/N)! What the hell just happened?" You snapped out of your trance and saw Sirius standing in front of you.

"I don't -- I don't know." You said, feeling hurt and confused.

"Well, you should go after him!" Sirius shouted. You stared. "Come on, go!"

"Right, okay. I'm going." You said, quickly rushing out of the Great Hall. Once you walked out, you saw James sitting on a staircase, his head in his hands.

"James?" You said softly, sitting down next to him. He snapped his head up and looked at you.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to kiss you. I honestly don't know why I did. I mean, I like Lily, or at least I thought I did." James rambled, not daring to make eye contact with you.

"James, look at me." You said quietly. He slowly turned his head towards you, a small frown on his face. "It's okay. I don't mind that you kissed me. I just don't want to start anything with you if you're still confused about everything with Lily."

James started at you, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Okay." he finally breathed out. He looked forward again and rested his head on your shoulder, and you rested yours on top of his head.

...

School was back in session again and you and James still hadn't really talked about what happened that night. You were still friends, but it was just a bit more awkward with him than usual.

You were currently sitting down on the couch in the Gryffindor common room, finishing up an essay for potions, when you felt someone come up next to you. You looked up and saw James, looking very giddy and nervous.

"Oh, hey." You said, placing your quill down.

"Can you, um, stand up? Please?" he asked in a small voice.

"Uh, okay." You said confusingly, standing up from the couch. "Is everything okay?"

"I like you." he said abruptly, taking you by surprise. "I like only you. I don't like Lily anymore and I really wanna be with you."

"Really?" You said excitedly.

"Really."

You grinned widely and pulled him into a kiss, which he gladly returned.

"Finally!" You heard the familiar voice of Sirius Black shout, causing you and James to spring apart. You turned around and saw Sirius standing near the portrait door with Remus and Peter. "I've been waiting forever for this to happen."

"Oh, shut up." You mumbled, turning back to see James smiling at you.
