Checkpoint

"So tell me, when did this all begin?" The words swirl around my head as memories flood into my mind and I am dragged into the first one.

The sun had just gone down when I started to stir. Go time I thought to myself. I got up off the bare dirt and crept half hunched over to the side of the cliff near where I had slept. Military trucks were passing by and the beams of flashlights could be seen crossing over the trucks repeatedly. I snuck my hand down to my waist and gently wrapped my hand around my trusty pistol. She was an old german made pistol that had a name carved into her handle.  Violet was her name. Her and I were inseparable and she had gotten me through more sticky places than I could count. Lets just say I am great at math. I wish I was, I thought to myself as I carefully slide down the hill next to the cliff. If I was good at math than I could be sitting in an office and working on a computer instead of snapping people's necks and planning the next assassination. I murmured to myself all of my daily problems as I crept through the forest that extended from the hill to a concrete barrier with a soldier standing in front of it. Ah the sweet simplicity of missions like these, I thought to myself. These were my favorite of all. Not killing missions, not freeing a hostage missions,  just simple info reconnaissance missions. I picked up a rock near my foot and tossed it at a nearby tree. The rock hit the tree solid and attracted the attention of the soldier by the concrete barrier. He walked slowly to where the sound came from and the instant I saw this back open I leaped out of my crouched position, and sank my knife straight into his armpit piercing his heart. His flesh gave way to the sharp blade and in one second his life had ended.  I dragged his lifeless body deep into the forest out of prying eyes. I crept up to the concrete barrier and it was now dark and silent like I wanted it. Ahead of me there was a barb wire fence, a soldier on the other side and a watchtower passed the barbed fence. I spotted one man in the tower and another man circling the tower. In all there are three guards for this checkpoint. If I killed anymore than it would draw attention to my presence . My goal was to just get in and get out. I decided it was best to circle around the watchtower and slide under one of trucks. I hopped over the concrete barrier and slipped soundlessly into the forest. I was almost to the point I wanted to be at when the guy in the watchtower spoke to the guy patrolling.

"Hey Radalph! Do you know where Ralu went? "

"He probably heard a noise and pissed his pants." They both burst into laughter and when the laughter subsides Radalph clears his voice. "I will go check for him. He is probably patrolling the forest." Great another dead man, I thought to myself as I readied my knife. There was a door in the middle of the fence that I thought about going through but found was locked. Radalph, my new best friend, opened that door and left it wide open as he went into the forest to search for Ralu.

"Come to Papa," I whispered to myself. Radalph got no closer than three feet to me before I ran into him lifted his arm and plunged my knife through this armpit into his heart.  I had tried many executions and this one I found to be the quickest and the quietest. I left Radalph's body lying in the forest where it was. I sneaked through the opening in the fence and crept up the stairs.  The man at the watchtower was peering frantically around the nearby forest for his friend Radalph. Poor buddy. You will join him soon, I thought to myself as I inched closer to his undefended back.

"Where the hell did those two idiots go?" the man said to himself.  I crept closer to him until he was within knife range. I readied my knife, leaned over him and whispered into his ear.

"Peekaboo." I plunged my knife into his throat and dragged his dying body onto the floor. "Night night buddy." I chuckled to myself as I searched around the watchtower. A pair of keys, a map of the facility, a security clearance card and a flashlight. Might come in handy, you never know. I picked up the items and crepted down the stairs. Now all I needed to do was slide under one of the cars and I would be golden, I muttered to myself. It was just my luck that a truck had just passed the checkpoint and was about to pass where I was standing. I ran out into the Truck and hopped in the back of it without being spotted. Mission success, I said out loud as the truck carried me away into the facility.
