When my eyes opened again, I knew I was dreaming because the star-studded sky I was in seemed to go on forever – I was floating aimlessly and I was convinced I would continue to do so until I returned to the waking world.

As if on cue, a hunched, elderly man dressed in a cloak of constellations appeared a few metres in front of me. A low hood hung in front of his face, blocking his eyes from view. Cradled tightly in his hands is a shimmering pendant.
“H-Hello?” I muttered into the  void. My voice echoed, as if it was bouncing the walls of a vast, empty room.

“Rias Stadtfield.” His weathered voice whispered. I scratch my cheek awkwardly, giving him a shy wave. He scoffed. I flinched.

“There is no time for greetings. I am here to inform you of something vital to your existence.”

He turned and walked away. I called out to him, confused as to where he is going, but he continued walking regardless, his figure slowly disappearing the further he walked.

“Perhaps I should introduce myself.”

I stepped backwards as he is now in front of me, appearing in a burst of silver sparks. I was quick to step back again, before he speaks.

“I am the 999th protector of the zodiac siblings.”

I stay quiet and he continues, “At least, I was. I am dead.”

This catches my attention, “What do you mean?”

“I died long ago. It is only now that the 1000th is to be awakened. Rias, you have been chosen.”

I stare, dumbfounded at him. He rolls his eyes, “Look, kid I’m done with being patient. Here’s all you need to know. So basically, you’ll be taking my place.”

“I-”

“Also, you need this.” He threw the pendant at me and I barely caught it, “Now, listen. Throughout the ages there have been zodiac protectors, given the names Lady or Lord Cosmo depending on their gender. Up until now, every one has been too lazy to actually find the twelve zodiac siblings, myself included.”

“I-“

“Shut up.” He snapped, “Anyway, it’s been discovered that the destined zodiac family weren’t alive until now. It was all just a prophecy that wasted every single protector’s time. But now, you get to bear the burden. I’m free.”

“And dead.”

“Shut up.” He said again, “Anyway, a long time ago, the ancestors of the current zodiac siblings stole something from these aliens and blah, blah, blah....okay, the point is, you’ll be targeted by them. That’s ‘cause you’re the only person on Earth linked to the Zodiacs. You obviously have no info at the moment so if they find you now you’ll die for sure. Just think of it as a twisted game of Hide and Seek.  Find the siblings before Earth gets punched in the stomach.”

“I-“

“Shut up and take that explanation for how it is. I want to go and rest now. If you’re lost...then I can’t help you out. Sorry, kid.”

“I...”

But he was already gone
