"Bye, Mom". I wave to my mom as she walks away, then I stroll into Barnes and Noble. It was a normal Sunday afternoon, the sun was out and the sky was blue. I knew my mom would take a while at the department store across the street, so I take my time walking around the building. I wasn't looking for anything in particular today, so I just wandered around and looked for any book that looked interesting. I was looking at a particular book that had caught my eye when I heard a small sound to my right. I turned around and once I saw her, I felt at a loss for words. She was wearing black pants with a purple T-shirt, and her blonde hair was help up by black clip. She was tall and definitely way older than me, but I couldn't keep my eyes off of her. She turned once she felt that I had noticed her, and our eyes locked. We stood there for a second, staring in each other's eyes, then she got up and walked away. Once I came to my senses, I felt my heart pounding. I didn't know what to do but I knew I couldn't leave without at least getting her name, so I had to think fast. I saw her working at the checkout counter and immediately knew what to do. I grabbed a book and made my way to checkout.
"Did you find everything alright?", she asked.
Her voice was gentle and calming.
"Yes, thank you", I replied, handing her the book.
"The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo? Interesting....", she said as she scanned the book.
"Have you read it?", I asked curiously
"It's actually one of my favorite books"
"Mine too, this is a gift for my friend"
"Well I hope they enjoy it, your total is $15.67"
I pay for the book then walk away. I'm halfway to the door when I realized I didn't even get her name. So much for a plan. I have no other option so I turn around and say "can I have your number". I wasn't shouting but the people near the cash register do around and give me looks.
"What?", she says.
I walk back towards the counter and ask again.
"I said, can I have your number"
"You don't even know me"
"Hello my name is y/n, and yours?", I reach my hand out for her to shake it. She shakes my hand and says, "Well y/n, you're kind of a dork", then she lets out a chuckle. I roll my eyes and say, "Okay, what's your name then?"
"Jessica, my friends call me Jess", she says
"Well Jess, you're kind of mean", I say sarcastically, then she breaks out laughing.
"So now that we know each other, would you like to go to lunch?",I ask.
"How old are you?"
"19"
"19?!", she repeats in shock.
"Yes that's what I said" , she looks surprised
"Come back when you're 21, and maybe we'll have that lunch"
"What? 21?"
"Yes I'm almost twice your age,
now I have customers to help, goodbye"
"See you later!" I say. She rolls her eyes and turns to help another customer.
I walk out of the store and I feel great. I know she won't go on a date with me until I'm 21, but maybe I can come back next week and get to know her better.
