Crash and burn was their catchphrase, their signature line. Sam would come home from a stressful day and Jess would bring him cookies, and he'd smile asking "What would I do without you?" she would smile and say "Crash and burn."
Whenever Jess offered him something, whenever she would try and motivate him, or make him smile and tell him he's special, he would ask her the same question and she always answered the same way.
Like on their first date, she made cookies for him, "What would I do without you?" "Crash and burn."
The first birthday they celebrated together, she baked him a birthday cake with yellow frosting and crooked letters. Sam loved it more than he could even say."What would I do without you?""Crash and burn"
When they got their apartment together, he was really nervous that it wouldn't be good enough for her, but she told him it was the best home she ever had. She gave him a kiss and held his hand to calm him down."What would I do without you?""Crash and burn."
When Sam was planning his proposal, he kept practicing on how he was going to do it. But no matter how he presented the question, it never seemed right. He made himself so anxious that finally the only sentence he was brave enough to say was, "Jessica Moore, what would I do without you?"
The day of her funeral he stood alone at her grave long after everyone else had left. In his hand he held the ring he wanted to propose to her with, that he had bought in secret, the ring that now would bring him nothing but pain. He started crying while staring at the grave, "What will I do without you?"
Her words echoed in his head as he starts sobbing, "Crash and burn."
