It was nighttime.
Crickets sang and an owl far off called out into the cool air.
Somewhere near a gorge a blue-gray she-cat and a tortoiseshell she-cat sat on top of a large boulder on a cliffside.
The brilliant blue night sky shone with the likes of a thousand stars.
The blue-gray she-cat fixed her bright blue eyes upon the stars, feasting them on the burning white spheres of gas and light.
"Spottedleaf, has StarClan spoken?" The blue-gray she-cat open her scarred muzzle to speak to the cat beside her, but kept her eyes locked on the stars.
The beautiful tortoiseshell she-cat named Spottedleaf glanced the the long scar that rippled across her companion's shoulder. She flattened her ears to the sides of her head and looked away, knowing that this cat sought answers about the past wars her Clan had fought, and any that may be upcoming.
"N-no, Bluestar," Spottedleaf murmured to her leader, lowering herself slightly. Bluestar, oblivious to her medicine cat's suspicious posture and averting gaze, stiffened and hunched over, and Spottedleaf could the the glisten on moonlight of Bluestar's silver claws.
Spottedleaf stood up and delicately padded away from her dismayed leader. Once Spottedleaf had made it away from earshot of Bluestar, she glanced around and let out a breathy sigh. Bringing her head back up, she worked her way to a flowery overhang by an uprooted tree, long ago when floodwater made the soil smooth and easy to escape from.
There was a secret she had kept from her leader.
StarClan, their ancient warrior ancestors, had shared something with her.
'Fire.'
They'd whispered it, over and over again. It drove Spottedleaf mad.
Fire, Fire, Fire, she thought while curling up in a small feather-lined moss nest.
What could it mean?
Fire, fire, fire...
