I probably saw thus somewhere so it's most likely not my thoughts but I think one of the main reasons stranger things season one was so good was the fact that there were three little genre subgroups inside the big show.
I mean think about it.
Lucas, Dustin, and Mike are in this adventure sci fi genre where this group of kids are looking for their missing friend and they make a new, powerful one along the way. (eleven)
Nancy, Jhonathan (and sort of Steve) are in the horror/teen romance where they find out some crucial stuff about the demigorgon and have some complicated feelings along the way.
and finally Joyce and Hopper are in this kind of crime show/sci fi where the discover some dark secrets about the hawkins lab as they dig for info on the conspiracy of Wills "death".
each group as one piece of Will's puzzle and it only comes togather when they all meet up.
